CAR ON FIRE.
BRIGADE HURRIES IN WRONG DIRECTION. [THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON.. April 4. A motor-car which was being driven along Jackson street, Petone. on Sav urday night by Mr Charles O'Leary, of Grafton road. Roseneath, suddenly burst into flames. The occupants jumped out, and the car then crashed through a verandah post and into the plate-glass window of Mr H. Pratey's grocer's shop. With the assistance of residents, the car was pushed across the pavement away from the shop, and with the aid of garden hoses and fire extinguishers, the fire was put out. In the meantime an alarm had been sent to the fire station, but owing to some fault in the alarm mechanism, the wrong fire box number appeared on the station indicator, and the engine was sent to the Gear Meat Works in the opposite direction. It -was nearly a quarter of an hour after the alarm was given before the brigade arrived at the scene of the fire.
