NORTH CANTERBURY.

HANMER SPRINGS. The lina! game of the local triangular cricket competition was played on Saturday, when Hospital and Township met. Batting first, Hospital were dismissed for the small total of 26, to which Township responded with 82, the innings being played right out. For the winners Webb scored 37, J. Williams 11, and Butterworth 10, and the best bowlers were Prebble four for 8. Webb six for 16. For Hospital with 11 not out, was the ouly batsman to make a stand, and Hart, five for 26, and Milliken, four for 25. gained tho bowling honours. Township thus wins tho competition, with Hospital as run-ners-up, and the former are entitled to hold the president's silver challenge cup awarded for tho con>i>etition. A children's fancv dress dance was held in the H'anmer Snrings Hall on .Saturday night lo assist the prize and annual picnic fund. These functions can be always be depended upon to draw a largo attendance, the hall being crowded to the door. The evening was the children's until the conclusion of tho awarding of prizes and supper, after which the grown-ups indulged in a couple of hours' dancing. Vrizes were awarded as follows:—Best costumes, Cora Burns and Jack Phillips; most original, "Norma Malaquin, Joau Lloyd, and Eric Galilee •„ special prises, Janet Webb, Bill Norton. Kathleen Graves, Joyce Lutton, Mollis Chappell, Betty Hughes, Ronald Anderson, Vivian Curson, and Raymond Malaquin. Cora Burns also received a special prize in recognition of her fine hnir. Another unbroken spell of fine weather was experienced last week. Clouds came up on one or two occasions and it looked as if the much needed rain might come, but nothing more than a light shower or two of short duration occurred. There was a continuance of tho intense heat conditions, and Sunday was undoubtedly tho hottest day experienced this summer, to which a parching nor'-wester contributed. A private thermometer under an iron verandah registered 100 degrees. Harvesting is being pushed • along, and it is understood that the crops of oats aro giving an exceptionally good yield. Growth is becoming more and more parched, and unless rain comes very soon the turnip crops promise to be more or less a failure.

AMURI. A meeting of the Amuri A. and P. Association was held in the Waiau Library Hall on Thursday evening, when the president, Mr G. Jolfs, presided over a good attendance. 6ome discussion took place regarding a vote of censure which had been passed on a member. Several speakers wero of the opinion that as tlic regulation, the breach of which had brought about the censure motion, did not appear on the schedule, the member was largely exonerated thereby, and Mr Aldridge moved, and Mr Savage seconded, that the vote of censure bo expunged from tho minutes. This was carried by a large majority. ■ After the conclusion of the meeting, a meoting of the committeo was held. The president, Mr G. Jelfs, occupied tho chair and there was also present Messrs P. R. Dunbar, A. H. Baker, W. D. Banks, J. F. Banks, G. Keid, It. Gould, D. C. Macfarlane, D. McLean, R. McKie, G. W. Aldridge, H. T. Beavon, G. S. Beaven, G. White, L. Iverach, C. Higgins, and the secretary. Tito treasurer's credit balance was declared to be £207 12s lOd. Mr S. Chaffey was elected to the committee to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr E. Mercer through having left the district, An application from the Wniau Presbyterian Church for the right to conduct the luncheon booth at tho annual show was accepted, as was aiso the application from Mr Black for the right to conduct a publican's booth. It was decided that arrangements should be made to hare a pipo band in attendance at the show. It was left in the hands of the president and secretary to procure ueiv tables for the staging of the shed exhibits. Marshals were appointed as follows: — Draught horses, Mr R. McKie; hack-* iieys, Mr C. Higgins; cobs and ponies, Mr 8. Chaffey; cattle. Mr C. Richards-; fat sheep. Mr G. S. Beaven; store sheep, Messrs G. White and L. Iverach; weighing steward, Mr R. L. WAIPARA. The weather during the past week has again been very hot, Saturday and Sunday, being exceptionally warm. The country is looking very dry, and parched, and a good soaking rain would be welcomed. Dipping operations have been carried on during the past week, but harvest is about finished in this district. Wheat and oats have given exceptionally good yields this year. Grain carting by raij and motor-lorry is general at present. The many friends of Mr H. Cameron, of Inverness, Waipara, will be pleased to learn that he is making a good recovery from bis recent illness. Mr Cameron is well and favourably known throughout North Canterbury being associated with many public bodies. Good progress is being made with the tennis court which is being laid out in the Waipara Domain. During tho past fortnight willing helpers have been busy assisting to carry out the necessary work.

SEFTON. A social and dance organised by the Sefton committee in aid of the Leithfleld Beach Improvement Fund, was held in the Kink Hall on Friday, and proved very successful owing largely to the support given by the neighbouring districts. Songs were contributed by a Rangiora party consisting of Messrs J. Thompson, F. Meyers, and Mouat. Music for tho dancing was provided by the Sefton Jazz Band, and extras were played by Misses D. Habgood and E. Carrol, both of Balcairn. During the evening Mr J. Ashworth, chairman of the local Social Committee, moved a hearty vote of thanks to those who had assisted with items, music, etc. A cake guessing competition was held, the cake being won by Mrs F. McGovran, who guessed the correct weight, 31b 14oz. An exhibition Charleston was given by Miss M. Patterson and partner.

AKAROA. On Saturday a loam of cricketers from the yacht Surprise played the local club on the recreation ground. Ak . batted first and compiled 97 runs, the chief scorers being C. Arnold 28, H. Pool 20. It. Bruce 1(5. Dr. V addell 12. The Surprise team made o2 l" their first innings. Potter and Hotfeldt each .scoring 10 runs. In the second innings, Bedford 39 and Copper }< were the principal scorers for the ship. Dr. Waddell. Rev. A. C. Purchas, and It. Currv were the most successful bowlers for Akaroa. whilst Bedford and Harper took most wickets for the Surprise team. The monthly meeting nf the Akaroa an 1 Wainui Bead Board was held at Duvauchelle on Saturday morning. Present: Messrs R. A. Mould (chairman), J. Hayward. and A. It. Haylock. An opinion was received from the Board's solicitors stating that the Board had no power to fence across unformed roads unless the consent of the adjoining owners was obtained. A ratepayer was notified that unless ho removed a fence from across a road within seven dnvs. the Boards men would do so at his expense. J. Plow, contractor for the Stoney Bay road deviation, npnlied for a further progress payment. It was decided not to make anv further payments uniil the completion of the contract. It was resolved to impose the ten per cent, penalty on all outstanding rates unpaid rfter March Ist. The ranper's and foremail's reports were read, and adopted. The finance report showed a total debit of £1958 Us sd. The Rev. Father 0. A. Gallagher revisited Akaroa on Sunday after an absence of nearly 12 months. Since leaving here he has made an extensive tour of the Old Country and America. Miss Harper, the winner of 3LO Australian beauty contest, accompanied bv , her chaperon, paid a flying visit here on Sunday. After lunch at the Bruce Hotel, the party were motrred around the town, and shown the Drineipal places of interest. They a'si had a short motor launch 'trip on the harbour, and after nartakinc of afternoon lea with the Mavor and at "Rlvthp"liffe." returned to Christchurch. Miss Harper was very much impressed with the beauty of Akaroa and its surroundings. •

LITTLE RIVER.

A garden fete was held amid tlio picturesque surroundings of the Kaituna Homestead, tbe residence of Mr and Mrs W. F. Parkinson, on Saturday afternoon and evening, to promote the candidature of Miss Marewa Parkinson, as maid of honour for the Peninsula district in connexion with the Canterbury A. and P. Association farmers' queen (Anne). The grounds •were on fete with decorations and various stalls. Electric light was extended round the lawns for the evening effort. Mr J. 0. Coop, president of the Canterbury A. and P. Association, brieflv welcomed the visitors, and Sir Heatoti Rhodes opened the fete. Sir Heaton emphasised the objects of the fete, and declared not only the function, but all purses and pockets o|>en for the occasion. At the conclusion of the fete. Mr Coop expressed hearty appreciation to all those who had contributed to the success of the fair, particularly the willing helpers, who not only emptied pockets, but filled patrons with cood returns.
