COUNTY COUNCILS.
SELWYN. The monthly meeting of the Sclwyn Count} Council was held recently. There were f rc " sent Crs. Hull, Gilmour, Pearson. Stone, Hight. Macdonnld. and Broun. Cr. Hall was voted to the chr.ir. The engineer reported that the contract for metalling Lcach s Track was completed with the exception of breaking the large stones. The superintendent of the Paparoa Prison had offered to supply shingle screened to one inch nt five shillings per cubic yard on trucks at Templeton. The engineer Mated that the railage arrl carting and .spreading on the main highway between Selwyn and Kakaia would bring the cost up to at least t*n shillings per cubic yard. This was considered to be too co?t!>. The tender o( the New Zealand Glove Com* paoy for the supply of dog collars was ar* cepted. It was decided to call for applications for a ranger for the Kakaia riding. The chairman of the District Highways Council wrote with regard to the question ™ised some time ago of the Main Highways Board providing the major cost of maintenance of the main highway approaching nru Selwyn bridge between Rollestou and Kakaia. and asking for a statement of land owners whose properties fronted on the highwaj, the amount of rates levied, and the total annual rates received. The clerk reported that he had made up a list and forwarded the same to the Highways Council, tho rates received from properties fronting the highway being £47 18* Bd. Cr. Brown was appointed the Council's representative to attend a conference when called by the Main Highways Council. The Commissi' r of Crown Lands wrote stating that by notice published in tho Gazette, the library reserve at Dunsandel had been vested in tho Council. The clerk was instructed to take proceedings for .the recovery of outstanding rates and water charges. The clerk was instructed to give ratepayers notice to clean their races within sevtm days, otherwise the Council would put men on to do tho work at their expense.
