Personal.

Latest inquiries elicit the fact that Mrs W. H. Nicholson is recovering well from her trying ordeal, and her many friends will welcome seeing her about once again. Messrs Browne, Bailey, and Allen, all of whom were connected with the rescue of Mrs Nicholson, are quite reeovcred after their heroic struggles. Picture Benefit. Mr Hutchius gave a picture benefit tor the. Borough picnic in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening. The hall was packed. At the close, tho committee thanked the audience for its support, and the proprietor for his fine programme. Tho net proceeds amounted to about £O. Sumnor District High School. Mr W. c. Collins, chairman, presided over the monthly meeting of the Sumner JJistrict High School. Present: Mes-' dames F. Harbor and Pyc, and Messrs H. M. Williams, F. H. Mathews, W. Duff, }{. McLachlan, and A. Wcastcll. The Education Board wrote stating that the question of additions to the secondary department would bo deferred until the attendance figures for 1927 were available. It was decided to ask the Board to meet the expenses occasioned by the classes travelling for technical instruction. The town clerk wrote stating that the Council had agreed to invite the storekeepers to observe Wednesday, February 10th, a holiday, for the Borough picnic. The secretary of the Education Board wrote stating that Mr W. H. Hampton* had been appointed to tho primary staff for one year. An application was received from tho Presbyteriau Women's Bible Class Union, asking for the use of a portion of the school during their stay in Sumner next Easter. It was decided to accede to the request, subject to the usual conditions regarding insurance and lighting. The headmaster's report showed, in the primary department, a roll of 198 boys and 175 girls—total 373. Thirtyseven had been admitted and sixty-sovon withdrawn. Miss M. Duncan and Miss Olliver had been appointed probationers. The secondary roll was 32. Tho examination results showed that one pupil had gained a senior national scholarship; two had gained junior national scholarships, one qualifying for the Cowio scholarship; five had passed the public service entrance examination, one with merit; and one primary scholar had guined u junior free place.

The committee extended its congratulations to tho staff upon the excellent results obtained.

Programme Committee. The programme sub-committee of tho Borough Picnic Committee met at the resilience of Mr H. D. Bates on Thursday eveniug to draw up the events and allocate tho prizes. Mr H. M. Williams presided over the following: Messrs A. Weastcll, W. Duff, B. Knox, J. Browne, and 11. D. Bates. After due consideration a comprehensive programme was drawn up.
