A l»r".e loiiuljec ...| eluded in tile |j c t of the steamer lonic, uliieh arrived at Auckland troni London and Southampton on Tuesday. 'lhe vessel has b'2S passengers, of whom 4'Jo are in the third-c'lass. The of tho passengers are as follows:—-Australia, 21; Auckland, 136; Wellington, 220; Napier and Gisborne, 28; Lyttelton, l>j, south of Lvttelton, ,'S Another addition to the collection of animals at the Auckland Zoo waj made when a male koodo was born. The koodo is one of the large, handsome species of African antelope, a pair of which were, added to the exhibits at the Zoo about two years ago as a result of the visit of tho curator to South Africa. It. is believed that this is the first birth of a koodn outside Africa. At a meeting of the Canterbury Patriotic Association yesterday, Mr W. E. Leadley asked if it would bo possible to have some of the disabled soldiers at the garden fete to be given in honour of their Royal Higlmcsscs the Duke and Duchess of York. Mr H. Holland (chairman) said that entpiiries had been made at Ranncrdalo Home, and it was found that very few of the returned soldiers would be able to attend the fete. It was suggested that the Duke and Duchess pay a call to Bannerdale Home in connexion with flic proposed drive around the City, and the matter was held over.

A conference of County Councils throughout Otago was held yesterday. A system of uniform by-laws was drafted and discussed at great length, after which tho cloven County Councils represented agreed to adopt the uniform regulations. Aa a result it will be possible for motorists to tour the Whole of Otago. under uniform regulations. Tho hope was expressed that the lead thus given would be followed by other provinces, particularly in the South Island.—Press Scrvi'je. "I walked past the theatre twice before I found it—l thought the building was a warehouse or something," said Sir Chas. A. Weumnn, of the J. C. Williamson directorate, who is visiting Christchurch. 'Mr Wenman said that when Mr John Tait arrives in Christchurch next week the nature of the alterations to th'o Thcatro Boynl will bo decided, on. "Personally," ho said, "I should like to sec structural improvements made. It is a somewhat gloomy-looking place at present." For tho week ended last Sunday, tho maximum load at the Lake Coleridge r-.ver station was 14,750 k.w., an appreciable increase as compared with the previous week's 14,160 k.w. Last week's maximum occurred on Friday, 4th inst.. between 8.30 and 9 p.m. Tho sub-station maximum also showed considerable increase, and was 11,380 k.w., as compared with 10/300 k.w. the previous week: the maximum Inst week was recorded between 8 p.m. and 8.30 p.m. on the 4th. The lnke level was at 1670.3 ft (1G70.40ft the previous week); and tho average inflow from tho Harper river was 141 cusocs (121 eusecs tho previous- week). Habits are largely the result of climate (says tho "JJominioii''). Wellington has Had certain proof that such is tho case in the number of cur-owning bathers, who during the last three, or four weeka have been making lor Oriental or Jivans Bay in tho early mornings, clad in flannels, or perhaps in pyjamas only, there to enjoy a plunge iu the briny before facing the duties of tho d&y. Another vagary of the warm season has been the amount of midnight bathing indulged in by motor-car parties and seaside residents, who lire in tho habit of defying the pillow as long as they possibly can. After a game of cards or a musical evening at seaside resorts, it has become ((iiite usual to have a pre-bedtime dip. One rowdy party of tho kind at. Day's Bny managed to make the early ritmduy morning hideous l<» those wooing sloop. There is no doubt that Wellington tins enjoyed a rather wonderful month of bnlmy weather, and its I'ik'et has lx>cn to drive people into the sea morning, noon, and night for the certain refreshment it "liver; mind and body.

The viee-rega! |>:irly, which has been visiting North Auckland, has been able to motor over a large area to various points of interest in consequence of the good roads that uro now available (says tlto "Star"'). In the old days of the North, bad roads were numerous, and Ihi! homely wagonette, or four-horse brake, were tin; medium for travel on State occasions. The, ancient jeliu was often n local character, probably a graduate* from one of Cobb and Company's coaches, and an adept nt handling the reins. A Governor visiting Whangarei on ono occasion was entertained at a banquet, nnd a drive to the Wairun Falls was planned for the following day. the fact that an early start was necessary being duly emphasised to the driver of a four-horse brake overnight. Somewhere about 10 a.m. next day the jehu and his team put in an appearance at the hotel where the Governor was stayinc, to brave tho wrath of nn extremely angry aide-de-camp. "And if ypr 'ad 'alf tho 'cad •m ycr what I've got on me '.his moruin'. yer wouldn't have been here til! somo time termorro'," Paid the delinquent, ruefully, when he pot. a chance to say a word.
