WAIMATE.

BOROUGH COUNCIL. At the fortnightly meeting of the Waimnte Borough Council on Tuesday night, there were present: The Mayor (Mr G. Dash), and Crs. W. G. Paul, J. Atwil}, A. E. Lewis, W. Nelson, J. B. Robinson, 11. Smith, d'A. S. Grut, and F. Nash. The application of the Waiinate Swimming Club for the use of the Municipal Baths on February 17th, for a carnival, was granted, and the matter of the broken spring-board was referred to the chairman of tho Water Committee. Mr A. E. Kirk wrote complaining as a ratepayer that one firm of carters in Waimate were given all the cartage for the Council, and no tenders were called. The Town Clerk said that sand was the only thing which tho Council had carted, and when they got tho season's supply tenders were called. A firm of carters had been given odd jobs for which tho Council were not called upon to call tenders.

It was decided to reply that if the writer required any information in regard to the matter, it would bo supplied at the office.

The application of the Waimate District High School Committee that tradesmen of Waimate be nskod to observe a whole holiday on February 24th, the date of the school picnic, was granted. The district electors' list was adopted.

General accounts amounting to £267 2s lOd, and Gas. Co. accounts amounting to £l9 10s 10d, were passed for payment.

Tho Town Clerk was instructed to make arrangements with Mr Menzics to have the temporary convenience in Victoria Park removed. It was decided to draw tho attention of Mr Menzics to tho fact that some protection from tho wind was needed in the gas houso in Scddon square, as tho wind blow out the gas when it was being used.

Fire Brigade. At the annual meeting of tho Waimate Volunteer Firo Brigade, Captain 11. S. Willctts presided over a good attendance. The annual report stated that the yenr had commenced with a credit balance of £5 10s, and had ended with a credit of £ls 2s 3d. During tho year tho practico nights had been well attended. There had been five alarms of firo during the year, one hedge, two straw fires, ono music shop, ana one unoecupicd shop. Tho total damage did not exceed £SO in the borough for the year. Tho chief event of tho year had been tho holding of the Canterbury provincial firo brigades' demonstration at Waimate. The Brigade had been successful in carrying out its work in a very satisfactory manner, and showed a credit of £37 14s sd. Fireman Englofield won the ladder event, and the A team came second in tho three-men event. Tho report and balance-sheet were adopted. A five-year service medal was presented to Fireman C. W. Enfdefiold, and two-vear service bars to Captain Willette, Lieut. W. Grange, and Firemen Thomson, Bctton, and F. Nash, and ex-Fireman H. F. Harrison. Tho prizes for tho billiard tournament were presented by Captain Willotts to G. Collett land J. Dolphin 2, and to tho hon. membor H. Bar"ford for tho highest break. Mr Barford gavo a trophy for tho next tournament.

Presentations were made to Firemen T. Dunstan for services in tho social room, and Ellis Maban, who had been transferred to tho OiJmaru Brigade, and to tho secretary, Mr Nash, for his services in connexion with the Firo Brigades' demonstration. Tho election of officers resulted: —Captain, E. Willetts; Lieutenant, W. Granger; senior foreman, A. Higgins; junior foreman, T. Dunstnn; secretary and treasurer, F. Nash, all re-elected. Tho captain and officers returned thanks for their election.

FAIRLIE. A meeting of members of the band was hold in the bandroOm ou Saturday evening. Mr W. Snushall, president, being in tho chair. The principle business of tho meeting was to form now rules for tho band. A copy of tho rules of the South Canterbury Pip© Band wero discussed, and it was decided to adopt theso, with a number of alterations. Tho president stated that the uniforms wero now showing signs of wear, and after discussion it was de- , cided that members hand in their nni- 1 forms for tho purpose of having thorn ( e' mod and repaired. Several minor ( matters woro dealt with, and the meet- , ing closed. , The schools re-opencd to-day after , tho Christmas vacation. The now secondary school building is neanng ; completion, and, when available, will ; supply a much-felt want. Swimming. On Monday evening, tho warm weather entice'd a large number to the swimming bath to witness tho weekly sports. The monthly meeting of the School Committee was attended by the following: Mcsdames Batchelor and Felton, and Messrs Oborn (in the chair). Wakefield, Brown, and Crossman. Correspondence was read from the Timaru Borough Council, granting tho committee frco hot water and milk for their picnic to Caroline Bay on Thursday. The South Canterbury School Committees' Association wrote concerning tho ar> rangements for the Duke and Duchess of York's visit, and soliciting f.nancial assistance towards delegates' expenses to tho annual conference of tho South Island Association. It was agreed that j the committee'B funds would not permit i of any grant being made. The letter* | were received. Miss Cooling wrote tendering her resignation from the staff as the had received a position on the

staff of Manunui School. Tho resignation was accepted with r6gret, and tho committee's high appreciation of Miss Cooling's four years' services on tho staff were recorded. A circular concerning assistance to tho blmd was left in tho hands of the headmaster Tho headmaster, Mr T J. C. Wilkins reported that the whole of the candidates who entered for the Matriculation and Public Service examinations were successful. One boy had passed matriculation after only two years' secondary work. Of the five who had passed the Publie Serviee test, four wero secondyear pupils. Three pupils, had matriculated, while one passed the Senior National Scholarship examination with credit. On the motion of the chairman, the staff were congratulated upon tho splendid successes again attained in the examinations. Mr Oborn was appointed visitor for February. During the past week tho weather has continued very hot, with the result that the harvest has come in very quickly. Some very heavy crops of wheat are in stook, and excellent results are anticipated when tho mills get busy.
