SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Mrs Vizcr, who was the guest of Mrs W. 11. Fea (Elizabeth street), returned to 'Wellington yesterday. M iss Kathleen Sharp arrived from Christchurch yesterday on a visit to Mrs John Moody (To Weka street). Mr and Sirs C. 11. Orr Walker have taken up their residence in Sefton street. Mr and Mrs H. W. McKay an:l family (Ranfur'.y street) have returned from a motor trip to Nelson and Marlborough. Major Spencer Westmncott (To Ivuiti), who was with Mrs Westmaeott (Nile itflet) left yesterday for the north. Miss Mona Coath (Auckland) is the guest of Mrs Harrison (South Canterbury). Mrs E. Baird Friberg left Timaru on Monday by the second express. She has been sketching in the Mackenzie country. Magistrate's Court. Mr C'. IJ. Orr Walker, S.M., prosided over a sitting of the Magistrate's Court at Timaru yesterday. James MyUs and David Mac Donald were charged with stealing a coat and vest and one coat and hanger valued at £'2 10s, the property of Stanley Harrow. Both the accuse*! pleaded not guilty. Gcorgo 11. Griffiths, painter, staled that he saw the accused in the main entrance to the Excelsior Hotel. Mac Donald endeavoured to put some clothing under Mvles's coat ; and 'M.vles tried to stop him. Witness then informed the proprietor of the shop_ next to the Kxcelsior Hotel of tho incident. The Magistrate said ho would let Mac Donald go on condition that he would get out of the town. He would ho convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within three months. Mvles was sentenced to one month's hard labour.

Constablo Mash stated that defendant was within two feet of the right hand corner, and a Municipal bus had to pull up in order to avoid a collision. Philomena Ward did not appear to answer a charge of driving a car round the corner of Stafford and Church streets and in so doing failing to keep to tho left, or near side of the road. A fino of £3 and costs 10s was imposed. Alex. Ogitvio (Mr W. H. Walton) pleaded hot guilty to driving a car round tho corner of Stafford and George streets on tho wrong side of the road. Tho evidence of tbo defendant was that ho was not driving the car at tho timetho offence was committed. Tho Magistrate said that it had to bo proved that the defendant was actually driving the car at the time of tho offence. Ho had n.ado a statement that ho was in town, but that was all. He would bo given tho benefit of the doubt. The information would bo dismissed without prejudice. Desmond J. Richardson for driving a motor-car in Stafford street, at a greater rate of speed than 12 miles an hour, was convicted and fined £2 and costs.

Hugh Youdale did not appear to answer a charge of failing to report a, motor accident at Pareora, defendant being the driver of tho car concerned. Mrs Clnrko stated that she Mas at Fnrcora on December 12th, and was crossing a bridge when defendant ran into her, knocking her into tho river. Tho Mngistrato said that ns defendant was not the driver of the car, ho could not be convicted, although it was possible defendant, would have to accept liability in a civil action.

On two charges of procuring liquor duriug tho currency of a prohibition order, Alexander Mcßrido was* ordered to como up for sentence on one charge, and convicted and discharged on tho other. Arthur F. Oliver (Mr W. Raymond) pleaded not guilty to a charge of assaulting William Ottley. Tho Magistrate convicted and fined Oliver 10s without costs. In n judgment summons cose, A. J. Cross was ordered to pay G. McClatchio and Co. £7 2s at the rate of 30s per calendar month. Cricket Association. A meeting of the South Canterbury Cricket Association was held in tjic chairman's office, when Mr G. P. Wood presided over a good attendance. A statement of accounts for the Ashburton and Canterbury representative matches was presented, showing a good credit balance. Mr C. Roundhill, umpiro for the Zingari-Old Boys' game at the Park, wroto complaining of tho conduct of a Zingari batsman during the progress of the game. It was agreed to nsk the player m question for an explanation. Tho North Otago Cricket Association wroto statins that tho dates submitted by tho South Canterbury Association were not suitable, and regretting that they could not accept a match at the suggested time. The same Association asked that dates be submitted after February 12th, when there wtfs every possibility of a match being arranged. The secretary of the Ashburton Cricket Association also wrote expressing thanks for tho treatment accorded while in Timaru, and suggesting return matches at Ashburton. The Ground Committee, consisting of Messrs Grant, Herdman, and tho secrotary, reported having met the representatives of the South Canterbury Rugby Union at Fraser Park, concerning°the preparing of a wicket for the match against the Melbourne CricketClub. The representatives of tho Rugby Union decided to give the Association every assistance, and it was agreet! to make arrangements to start the immediate preparation of a suitable wicket. Tim Commonwealth Silver Band, which has given a series of concerts on Carolino Bay, under arrangement with the Caroline Bay Association, concluded its season yesterday. A largely attended concert was given in the afternoon, and in the evening a record crowd attended, in spite of the bad weather. After the concert a dance was held in the Bay Hall, music being supplied by the band soloists. The hall was crowded. Ratepayers' Association. A general meeting of the North End Ratepayers' Association was held last evening, when Mr G. 11. Andrews presided over a good attendance. The chairman explained that the principal business before the meeting was to consider matters in connexion with tho Floral Fete, to be held on March 12th. In accordance with a resolution passed at last meeting the School Sports Association haJ been interviewed and had stated that they proposed to hold a sports meeting at an early date. Therefore, as far as tho Ratepayers' Association was concerned, tho sports were off, although they would help tho School Sports Association in any way possible. On the motion of Mr Bcnstcad, seconded by Mr E. Noldgatc, it w.is decided that the Association approve of holding a bag day on a date to bo fixed bv the executive.

The action of the executive, in voting £45 to the Borough Council for tho purpose of completing the croquet lawns at Ashburv Park, was approved. Messrs "ilumc, I'alliser, Lewis, and McKay were appointed a sub-comuiit-tce to arrange for an outing for tho St. Saviour's Orphanage boys, on a date to be arranged. A letter was received from the senior cadets' military band, appealing for funds for the purchase of instruments, music, etc. It was decided that although the Association was in sympathy with the aims and objects of the Band they regretted that such a grant would be outside the purposes and constitution of the Association.
