LIFE-SAVING.
w CANTERBURY CENTRE. A meeting of the committee of the Canterbury Centre ot the Reyal Life-Saving Society was held last evening, Mr K. Bassett presiding. The Canterbury Surf and Life-Saving Association wrote asking tor a donation ot £5 towards sending a Kelson Shield team away. It was decided to accede to the request. The Ashburton Swimming Club wrote cancelling affiliation with the society, owing, the letter stated, to the recent action ol the society in arranging a demonstration of lifesaving and swimming in Ashburton, and completely ignoring the existence of an affiliated club. Tho Insertion of an advertisement (they underttood at tho society's request) by the Ashbnrton Borough Council, inviting the public to attend was a direct slight to those who were doing their best to' further the interests of swimming in Ashburton. The secretary stated that he had replied expretsing surprise that the Ashburton Club had taken exception to the society doing its work in Ashburton, a town in tho Head Centre's territory. The facts* were that the society had been asked for an examiner to be appointed to examine a class of pupils, and as at present there was.no official examiner in Ashburton, the society had to make arrangements to conduct the examination. This had to be done at very short notice. At the tame time it was thought advisable to arrange for a display of life-saving, with a view to arousing some interest in tho work. The Ashburton Club was not taken into consideration, as this was solely a lite-saving matter, and the club did not seem to take a great deal of interest in tho work. The secretary'a action was approved. It mi decided that tho Chrlstchurch City Council be asked to subsidise the payment of beach patrols at Sumner and New Brighton. It was also decided that it bo a remit to the New Zealand annual conference that the conference consider ways and means for the establishment of beach patrols.for life-saving, and that a Government subsidy be obtained, if possible, to atsist local bodies in payment of such patrols.
