Information has been received from Ross t-j tho effect that 50 per cent, of the male population is dependent on sawmill work, and all the mills in the locality aro now closed or are closing. J.arge supplies of sawn timber are on hand and some few days' employment Ims
' .u afforded by filleting white pine to prevent serious deterioration. Otherwise the outlook fo r millers and employees is anything but bright. Men are" now daily seeking employment, which is unavailable. A local miller who had to close down said the state of the timber trade was principally duo to the importation of foreign timbers from Canada and the United .States, causing a shortage of orders for the New Zealand connuo- —. Most timber yards in the buying centres were congested with New Zenland timliers, which had to give way to the imported article. There was no immediate prospect of the market improving unless builders brought only New Zealand timber.
