♦-, SOUTH ISLAND FEDERATION. (1T.F.33 ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) INVERCARGILL, February 8. The following remits were adopted at the Minunl conference of the South Island Feder.v tion of School Committees' Association today:—
Otago: That the matter of the methods of the Education Hoard in selecting and appointing school assistants be revised so that the recommendations of the School Committee upon an? selection of learners should bo prolierly considered and given effect to. and uhero two or more candidntes aro within n radius of five points the committee shall have a selection. Utago: That the Minister for Education b« asked to favourably consider tho question of granting to delegates attending the annual conference of School Committees' .Associations free travelling passes. Otago: That tho Federation <ltitv t.'ie nttention of tho Minister for Education to tho desirability of tho School Committee:, having direct representation on tho Council of Education.
Southland: That a representation bo mado to tho Government that no application for new district High Schools be grafted unless the town making the application bis a population of at least 5000 people, and that steps be taken to abolish tho existing district High Schools except in localities of 5000 or more of a population, and that the savings effected thereby be utilised to subsidise board allowance for country children attending High Schools. Southland: That no married lady teachers be appointed to positions in schools unless tho members of the Education Board are fully satisfied that their n-cumstanccs justify such an appointment. Canterbury: In view of the heavy rhr.rgcs for fuel imposed on tho School Committees in the South Island during the uinter inouti>>, this conference is of the opinion that the Education Department shjuid make a special grant of Is per capita p-r amrini for this purpose, over and above tin ordinary incidentals. The following office-bearers were elected: President, Mr U. P. Purnell (Christchurch); vice-presidents, Mr A. W. Jones and Mr W. Gibb; secretary, Mr J. Stuart; executive, Messrs L. Ritchie. W. 11. Steele, P. Patton, T. West, J. Preeno. It was decided that tho next conferun;e be held in Christchurch in February, 1928.
