AN ALLEGED NUISANCE

COMPLAINT FROM WIGRAM AERODROME. At the last meeting of the Paparua County Council, Captain Findlay, Officer in chargo of tho Wigram Aerodrome, wrote concerning tho alleged nuisance arising from the premises of tho Canterbury By-Products Company as follows: "I ain writing to ask whether any action can bo takon to prevent, or at any rato minimise, the most offensive smell created by the By-Products Works, at Sockburn. When there is an easterly or north-easterly wind blowing, tho living and working quarters hero arc rendorod almost unbearable. All tho windows and doors facing the By-Products Works have necessarily to bo closed, even on the hottest day. It is obvious that tho swarms of flics which infest this area are directly due to the presence of this obnoxious smell. Wo have fly-proof doors and windows on all tho living quarters, and every precaution is taken to reduce tho number of flics, and it is noticed thut when this stench is particularly bad the number of flies increases. I would bo glad if somo responsible official of the By-Products Company would visit this aerodrome when there is a light easterly blowing, and ascertain whether any of these statements are at all exaggerated. It appears to mo to bo nothing short of a scandal that such an offensive alato of affairs should bo allowed to continue; polluting, as it docs tho whole atmosphere for miles around. Trusting that you will bo good enough to advise me what further action can bo taken in the matter."

Mr James Hay ton also wrote on the samo subject. After considering tho two letters, it was decided to visit the works at the end of the Council meeting. All tho members and the clerk visited the works and were very dissatisfied with the state of the drainage area. It was subsequently resolved to write to tho Parliamentary representatives, and to the District Medical Officer of Health with regard to the state of affairs. At tho time of inspection there was a large area of liquid drainage, several feet deep, which appeared as though it had lain on the ground for a very considerable time.
