TIMBER INDUSTRY.
MILLS CLOSING ON WEST COAST. (rHESS ASSOCIATION TELEOBAM.) \ HOKITIKA, February 8. Additional sawmills are closing down through lack of orders, including the Kanieri sawmill (Hokitika) and Stuart Chapman, Ltd. (Hoss). Some 50 men are invoh'ed in the former and 60 in the latter. Lack of orders is the cause. Other mills employing a considerable number of men are likely to bo affected similarly in tho near future. The Westland Countv Council resolved to bo represented in the deputation to wait on the Prime Minister on his return to urge remedial action to assist the milling industry, as tho effect of the stoppage of the mills was most serious in tho district.
