ASHBURTON. PERSONAL. Major H. D. McHugh, regimental district commander for Timaru, made an unofficial inspection of the B Company of the senior cadets on Monday evening. He will make his last official visit to Ashburton on Friday, and on the following Monday will inspect A and B Senior Cadet Companies, prior to leaving on transfer for Invercargill, to take over command of that district.

County Water Supply. With tho continuous dry weather and the disappearance of snow on the back country ranges, there is a possibility of somo of the water-race systems in the county, especially in the coastal districts, being affected. The County Engineer (Mr A. A. Fooks) stated yesterday that although there was ample supply of water for the whole of the county at tho present time, if the present dryness continued there might bo difficulty in maintaining tho flow in tho future.

Bridges. Repair work to tho decking and under-structurc of the Rangitata traffic bridge has been resumed, and although traffic will not bo affected for the present, steps may have to bo taken to regulate it in the future. ' The concreto bridge over a large water chnnnel on the main highway near Buccleugh has now been completed. Motor Registrations. Returns of tho number of motor vehicles registered in New Zealand for tho year 1926 were received yesterday by tho Ashburton County Council from the chairman of Highways District Group 15 (Mr P. Langbein), and they show that the total for the South Island was 59,428, and tho North Island 95,897. In Group 15, which embraces all that territory between tho Rakaia River to Oamaru, tho registrations totalled 11,877. Band F«te Beceipts. The object of the promoters of the band fete to raise £3OO, about the sum which is required for tho expenses of the First Canterbury Mounted Rifles Band to attend the contests at Wellington this month, has been exceeded by nearly £SO.
