SURF-BATHER DROWNED.
PLUCKY ATTEMPT AT RESCUE. (miiSS ASSOCIATION TELKOBAM.) TAUHANGA, February 7. While surf-bathing at Mount Maunganui yesterday morning, Paul Mischefski, aged 21. was drowned. Several bathers were in tho surf at tho time, when tho young man and another, Armstrong, got into difficulties. Their matcß got Armstrong out and called to two others—Lewis Peglar and Dudley Lloyd—to help Mischefski, who was unable to swim. They were swimming to the shore, Mischefski floating, when a big breaker caused him to grasp Lloyd, and both went under. Lloyd dived and brought Mischefski up. He then struck out for shore to get a life-lino while Peglar supported Mischefski. Before reaching tho shore Lloyd noticed Peglar alone, and went back, and found that both had gone down, Peglar losing his hold on Mischefski. Peglar managed to get ashore, fairly exhausted.
In the meantime, two, others attempted to reach the man in trouble witli a life-line, but he disappeared before they reached him. The police were informed, and a search was made for the body, but it was not recovered. Mischofski's younger brother was drowned on the inner beach at Mount Maunganui two years ago.
