RECORD SMASHED.
BRITISH CAR'S FEAT. DRIVER'S GOGGLES BLOWN OFF. (bt cable—press association—cortrioft.) (Australian and n.i. cable association.) LONDON, February 4. Malcolm Campbell, in the racer "Bluebird," smashed the world's speed record at Pcndine Sands with a mean averuge speed in excess of 171 miles hourly. The times were:— One kilometre in 12.701 seconds, or IT4.S4;> miles an hour. One mile in 20.003 seconds, or 174.224 miles an hour. Campbell's achievement was a magnificent triumph for British motoring. The "Bluebird" is British entirely, whereas Parry Thomas's cor, in which the previous record was established, has an American engine. When he finished, Campbell had almost to bo lifted from the car. Tlio terrific wind pressure blew off his pogglcs. Ho said that as the thig posts flashed by they were just a blur.
