"HEAD OF THE RIVER." SATURDAY'S RACES. A further series of the "head ot the river" races iru rowed on Saturday ifternoon. - All the races were pair-oar event*, and for the first time since tho start of the competition thoro was a lack of close finishes. Weather conditions were good. The points for tho "head of the river" competition aro now as follows:—Union 14, Avon 6, Canterbury i. Following are tho results of Saturday's racing:— YOUTHS' PAIRS. First heat—Avon No. 2 (G. Kuahworth atr., A. Wodham how) 1, Union (F. Duggan str., 7. Weir bow) 2. Union started well and took the lead, but Avon rapidly gained. Just after Eetreat road bridge, Weir, the Union bow man, got cramp, and the boat had to pull out o! the race. Avon finished the course in good tint*. Second heat—Avon No. 1 (H. LanauM etr., A. Frame' bow) 1, Canterbury (F. C. Godfrey str., B. Johnston bow) 3. Avon took the lead from the gun, and kept their position until the finish, winning comfortably. Final. Avon No. .2 .. ..1 Avon No. 1 .. ..3 No. 2 took the lead after pissing Cowlishaw's corner, and went in to win by two lengths. JUNIOR PAIRS. First heat—Union No. 1 (F. Rogers str., G. Duggan bow) 1, Canterbury (G. H. Arnold str., A. K. Johnston bow) 2. Soon after the atari, Johnston, the Canterbury bow, came off his alido and lost about two lengths. Canterbury pulled up well, but Union finished • clear length ahead. Second heat—Avon (B. Bejrklo str., R. Lyons bow) 1, Union No. 2 (H. L. Bush str., W. Grecnway bow) 2. A good tnce up to Cowlisfaaw's corner, where Avon pulled well away. Union cracftd tip after Stanmore road bridge, and Avon went on to win by many lengths. Final. Union .. .. ~1 Avon .. .. ..2 Both crows made a good start, ttnd Avon soon gained a alight advantage. Rounding Cowlishaw'a corner. Union fouled Avon, who vppemicd. Avon lost woli over a length, and Union went on to win easily, SENIOR PAIRS. First heat—Union (W. L. Whitt.ngton sir., h. Duggan bow) 1. Canterbury No. 3 (McGrath str., D. Boyd bow) 2. Union t<*k the lead it Cowlishaw's corner, and won by a length. Second heat— Canterbury (F. 11. Brown str., F. G. Oborn bow) 1, Avon (C. Stiles str., G. Stiles bow) 2. Both crews were level at Cowlishaw'a corner, when Brown, stroking Canterbury, sprinted and went on to win well. Final. Canterbury ~ \ Union .. .j Union bad the advantage up to Cowlishaw'a corner, whore Canterbury sprinted and came on to win easily.
