In reply to the Borough Council request the Tramway Board stated tint it was unable to grant similar concessions to the residents of New Brighton as those granted to the visitors during tho school holiday*. The Royal Life-Saving" Society have suggested to the Council '.hat an Efficient Surf Life Guard should be at once appointed throughout the week, instead of at week-cnd3 as at present. It has been decided to inform the Municipal Electricity Department that tho annual chnrge for lighting tho lamps on tho sea-wall, at £4 10s per lamp, is acceptable, provided the charge covers tho cost of installation, lighting, and maintenance. The Special Committee, set up in connexion with the determining of tho Pier license, have reported that the lessee has agreed to all the conditions submitted in connexion with same. A sito has been granted tho Committeo of the Military Tattoo for the purposo of a Treasure Hunt. Provided finances are available tho outlet drain in Bligh street is to bo continued to the river. The Council have favourably considered Mr W. H. Flavcl's quotation for the supply of sanitary pans for the current year. A grant of £5 has been made to tho Borough and School Picnic Fund. Accounts drawn on the District Fund, £ll6B 6s 6d, £52,000 loan £234 5s on South Brighton bridge loan £59, have been passed for payment. Library Committee. The annual meeting of the Library Committee, to havo been held on Tuesday, did not eventuate, the attendance being insufficient to form a quorum. Tho meeting will probably take place towards the end of tho month. Central Gala. A meeting of tho Central Gala Committee was held in tho Council Chambers on Wednesday, tho Mayor, Mr J. Gamble, presiding. The statement of accounts in connexion with tho recent gala sliowod that after paying off the debit balanco of last year's gala, and squaring up tho accounts of this year's function, thero was a profit on tho 1927 gala, of £l3 6s lOd. Tho gross receipts were shown as £207 8s Id, which included tho Tramway Board rcbato on extra gala traffic of £4l 4s 2d. Votes of thanks wer9 passed to the General Committee, and to all who had assisted at tho Borough annual festival, while honoraria wero voted to the joint secretaries, Messrs L. Hardio and E. Sugdcn. ' It was agreed to hold tho annual domain fete on Saturday, February 26th, and sub-committees wero set up to put the necessary machinery in motion.

The following were appointed the officials for the fete: Chairman, the Mayor, Mr J. Gamble; vice-chairman and treasurer, tlio Deputy-Mayor, Councillor J. H. Shaw; secretary, Mr E. Sugden. It was agreed to write tho local Municipal Band in the matter of the supply of music for tho function. School Committee. At the monthly meeting of the School Committeo there were present, the chairman, Mr 11. A. Glnsson, Mrs Moses, and Messrs J. Buxton, A. £. Lnwry, A. W. Duhkley, J. Orsborn, tho secretary, Mr T. Robins, and tho headmaster, Mr E. S. Pearson. Tho chairman stated that Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., had advised him that tlio Commissioner of -Lands would have no objection to the granting of a section in tho Bnwhiti Domain as a site for a manual training Collego. Mr Glasson also reported having interviewed Dr. T. F. Telford, District Health Officer, regarding the establishment of a dental clinic. Dr. Telford had promised his help towards the desired establishment, and would inspect tho room in the school it was proposed using for tho clinic. It was agreed that surplus funds arising from tho recent flower show should bo used for the purpose of providing furnishings for the clinic. Tho Education Board advised the following appointments to the staff: Miss A. E. Alexander to be infant mistress; Miss Edna Gabb and Mr Johnston Moffatt probationers. The Board also stated that further consideration has been given to the Committee's application for the provision of a shelter shed at the Central, School, and the"Board's senior inspector, together with Messrs Winsor and Thompson, of tho Board, had been requested to furnish a report regarding the matter, also in the matter . of the remodelling of the school building. The resignation of Miss D. E. Hill, of tho teaching staff, was accepted with regret. The hendmaster, Mr Pearson, reported that tho school had reopened j with a very satisfactory attendance, while a number of new pupils had been added to the rolls o£ both Central alld South Schools. Grass Fires. I The Fire Brigade were called out twice on Tuesday to subdue grass and scrub fires, which they effectually accomplished in spite of tho high wind blowing at the time. Annual Smoke Concert. At the third annual smoke concert of the Beresford Club, the patron, Mr A. \V. Owlcs, occupied tho chair, and thero was a large attendance of members. During the evening a lengthy toast list was gone through including that of "The King," "Kindred Sports," "Tho Ladies," and "The Press." Vocal, instrumental, and elocutionary items by Messrs Butterfield, Munro, Adams, Seymour, Elstob, A. W. Owles, the club's orchestra, and others helped to make the oeqasion enjoyable. A feature of tho evening's enjoyment were *ho items by wireless loud speaker, which has been especially fitted up and installed by Mr Fisher, of the Brighton Badio Service. The evening's entertainment concluded with "Auld Lang Svne." 8.A.0.8. At the meeting of the local Lodge of the R.A.0.8., No. 645, N.Z. 18, at which the W.P., Frank Calson, C.P., presided, it was decided to celebrate the anniversary of the Lodge on Tucsdav the 13th inst., bv holding an Open Night. Farewell Social. The parishioners of St. Faith's Church are tendering a farewell social to the Bev. Canon T. A. Hamilton, in the parish hall, on the 10th inst, and will, at the 6amo time, welcome the vicar, the Rev. C. W. Maclavertv, on Ins return from Great Britain to the parish. Scchre Tourney. The local company of Scsior Cadets A Compvuy 5 (c) B»tUrion, Canterbury p.oiriroent, resumed training, after their long furlough, on Wednesday. Borough Picnic Coniniittoe. A meeting of the Joint Committee of the School and Borough Council employees was held on Thursday, Mr H. A. Glasson presiding. Representatives were present from tho North Beach School and tho Council Employees' committee. (The offer of the local Municipal Band to provide a programme of music was accptcd with thanks. The collecting of tickets in the train was left in the hands of Messrs Buxton, Wilson, Leaver, and Close. It was agreed that £5 should be spent in tho purchaso of small | presents for tho children, including infants, this apart from the cost in the purchase of trophies, prizes, etc. The suggestion by tho Railway Department that two adults bo in charge I of each compartment, was adopted. South Brighton Gala. A mooting of tho South Brighton Gala Committee was held in the Bridge street Hall on Thursday, when Mr T. Robins presided over a very largo attendance. Tho report aud balance-sheet were adopted, tho latter showing a nctt profit of £167 7s 7d. Of this the Pleasant Point Boating and Yachting Club, who acted in conjunction with tho Committee in tho running of the Gala, received ono third of tho nott proceeds, £56. Tho balanco is to bo handed over to the Borough Council for tho purpose of helping to meet the cost of making alterations to tho existing shed, and the erection of proper bathing sheds, nearer to the beach at tho Point. A small sum, somo £5, to be handed to tho Progress League for tho purposo of initial expenses in connexion with next year's function. It was decided that tho timber used in stalls shonld bo sorted, bored, nnd bolted to eliminate the uso of nails, and to facilitate erection on n future occasion. The chairman congratulated tho organiser of the Gala, Mr E. Johnstone, tho secretaries, Messrs* Scarr and Orsborne, tho Committee, and all who had worked so well, and with such splendid results. Mcsdames Rogers, Famhill, Miss Inncs, and Messrs Woodward, nnd Flood wero appointed to make arrangements for the holding of a social to Gala workers and friends. Votes of thanks were passed to tho joint secretaries, Messrs Scarr and Orsborne, to Messrs Scrimshaw and Traynor, and to Messrs F. D. Muirson, nnd D. M. Hill, for donations in cash and in kind.
