TRAFFIC LICENSES.
POLICE REFUSE TO INVESTIGATE [THE PBESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, February 4. Since tho Auckland City Council has tnken over control of traffic in the Citv area, tiio Polite Department has intimated it will not undertake any furtbor enquiries in respect of applicants for licenses to drive horse-drawn vehicles for hire, but will continuo to report upon applicants for licenses to drivo motor vehicles, as the issue- ot these is subject to control by statute At tho meeting of the Council last evening, the Chief Traffic Inspector reported that the Departments decision to discontinue tho investigation worK would make it impossible to ascertain t'.:o character of an applicant unless the Council had access to tho pohco records. He recommended that representationa should be made to tho Minister for Justice. The Finance nnd Lc?al Committee, in recommending the adoption of the inspector's report, suggested that the Council should convene a meeting or the Auckland members of Parliament before the next session of Parliament with the object of bringing to their notice the whole question of traffic co"»rol. The committee's recommendations were adopted.
