SPORTING.

TURF GOSSIP. Nominations for tho Nclvjii Jo'kcy Club's Annual Mcetin • to-dav* Acceptances for the Dunedin Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting, al.-o for.cit for the Champagne Stakes, are due to-day. Acceptances for tho Taranaki Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting close to-mor-row. As a result of representations mado fcv Hiccarton trainers and owners, the lommitt.-e of the Canterbury Jockey Club have agreed to lay down a bulling green on a .-ite adjacent to the »f raping sheds. A meeting of those infrestcd will shortly be held, and it is hoped to have the green in playing cider for next season. In a recent communication, the cxRiccartoii trainer. W. Holmes, forwarded an elaborate programme of the season's r.t'ing, extending over IUO days, of the Tijuana Jockey Club, stnated 1-3 miles .south of San Diego, California, in Old Me:;ico. Holmes had commenced the circuit, well, winning one rat* with Rarbwrre. and securing second 1 north with Summer's Heir, purchased from the Prince of Wales, in the only two starts he had had. Tlie Southland apprentice jockey, N C. Dwvcr. suffered severe head injuries through Ace of Hearts falling with him in tho Flying Hack Handirap at the I'apanui Meeting on Wednesday, and was removed to hospital.

First Acre must be the most travelled horm at present in commission. Last vcar he was taken as far eoutti as InVercargill. At Christmas time ha raced at New Plymouth, and came down to run on tho third dav at Awapuni. He then went to Tauhercnikan for tho New Year, and raced twice. This month he raced each day at Foxton, and then went to Trentham to run second to Centrepiece. Last week hj« had a couple nf outings at Pahiatua, and on Wednesday won the Flyinj; Handicap at Egmont.

In tbo Flying Handicap at the Tapanut races, Ace of Hearts fell, and tho rider, N. C. Dwyer, sustained seriouu head injuries. Ho was removed to hospital.

By winning the Pahiatua Cup, and running second in the Egmont Cup, Nukumai once again furnishes pointed evidence of carrying his eight years remarkably well. A hurdlo race performer of marked brilliancy and with a steeplechase victory also to hi* credit; Nukumai has earned the allround certificate. Mr S. G. Davidson has Rood reason to rejoice over tins ffcet that ho withstood the overtures that were once made to him to sell tho bay gelding, for ho has proved n lino stake-earner in the interval. Up to date Nukumai has contested 72 races, ami his record stands as follows:—Hi wins, 14 sec.-nds, 10 thirds, and 30 times unplaced Nukumai has won stakes to the value of over £OOOO.

Lord Astor, who has Icon racing for something like 20 years, has at times been referred to as unlucky, but that has chief reference to the Derby, in which race colts carrying his colours have filled second place on no five occasions since 1918. A computation reveals that horses carryins Lord Astor's colours hare won stakes to the value of £201,915 since 1900, but, as is remarked, it would be highly interesting to know the amount of tho outlay attendant thereon.

A well-known American turf authority says that at the present raltio of horses, if Whittier, Manfred, Windbag, and Heroio had records in England as they have in Australia, they would be worth about £IO,OOO each. Do not be surprised (he says) if a few horses are bought in Australia for America next-year. In view of the establishment of a New Zealand yearling sale at Trentham, it is quitte possible that in the future Americans may be. amongst the buyers. In this connexion, "floamer' r writes in n recent itsuo of the' Lexington (Kentucky) "Thoroughbred Record":— "l should like to see some first-class Australian and Now Zealand horses this country. It seems t'o me there are more first-class horses In Australia arid New Zealand at present than in any country where racing occurs, and I attribute this to the fact that Australian «and New Zealand homes are bred to rare primarily and not' as potential . sires to stand at exorbitant fees. Tito more a horse K raced, the better Insight wo shall gain of his "rue worth, and I would be more inclined to chance mares with a horse such as Windbag, Poitrel, or Trafalgar than a horse that has been retired after a singlo success in one of the. so-called classic*. . . . I nayc no means of knowing how good the Australian and New Zealand horses are. I hare every reason to suspect they nre the equal, if not superior, to their competitors in any land, and it is too had that condition* preclude their matching strides with the best in England and America."

TROTTING NOTES. XomlaatioM for the Otnbuhu T.C.'s Euthmef Meeting close to-day at 5 p.m. Nominations for the Kaikoura T.Cl.'s Annual Meeting close to-day at 7 p.m. Nominations for six events at tho Kelson J.O.'a Summer Meeting close today at 6 p.m. Acceptances for the Metropolitan T.C.'I February Meeting close on Tuesday at noon. Training operations havo not been Tcry interesting of Into u tho mnjotity of the horses in work are well forward, and do sot require much fast work. Yesterday tho track was fast and freely need, but few horses were extended, tho majority of {he trainers being content to give their charges half to threequartet paco exercise.

F. 0. Holmes worked St. Maura over ■ coupto of circuits. The daughter of fit. SwithJn was not extended, but she pot plenty of dash into her effort, and appeared anxious to go fast. N. L. Price drove Transport a mile and a half. Good time was registered over tho first ten furlongs, when the •on of Logan Pointer was eased, and *ot driven out at tho finish.

ttormy and Stunt Artist wero companions work-out over two miles, and it was a pleasing display on tho part of tooth horses.

Dusky Pointer and Tho Thiiitlo finished on terms at the end of a similit* journey. Tho latter worked at tho trotting gcitj and acquitted liinuielf with ercdit.

Audalio (saddle) covered a mile the Tfverso way. Ho appeared to bo doing his test throughout, and had littlo left la reserve at the finish.

General Bingen, who has left M. B. Edwards's stable, and is now under tho caM of W. Baker, went a mile and a half it; a sound, pace, and was staving on wall at tho finish.

The trotters Audo Bell, Gabardine, fh» Toff, Great Amazon, Reverie, iind Count Dee worked Separately, but Were BOt asked to do their best.

J. MeCluro is working a promising threa-yearold filly by Bront Locanda from a Petereta mare at headquarters. Tna youngster la a nice pacer, and looks llk« CCBtiagio hand early.

I The aged parin.7 priding St. Hubert ! has been rcconimis?!o!,ed by J. Fri^cr. The son of Underwood looks bright and healthy, and has evident !y ben.. ::;•.••! by thu let-up. The two-year-old filly bv Mah-hiij'ii from Imperial Fan, in \\\ J. Toinkiuson's stable, is a nice p:n-rr. She was on the track yesterday, and came through her frisk in a sati'factory ii.anner. RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES. The <le<i-ion of the Canterbury Jockey Club to hold their Midsummer .Meeting on the dato originally uvrailed, February l'.Hli, has met with the appiwul of Jticr.irton trainers, many of whom would not have otherwise had the opportunity of racing their lioitcs until early next mouth. It is certain that every ttablc will Ixj icpresented and the cluu should receive a largo nomination. Training operations at lliccartnn yesterday were mostly confined to the plough, and soma good gallops wereexecuted by horses duo to race at Wiiigatui next week. Centrepiece, assisted by Green Cloth Olid Scrotina. was responsible lor an at tract he gallop over a mile and a quarter. Tho pace over tlio early part was not last, but he finished in good style, the journey taking 'J.FJ 4-j. The Chokcbore representative- is undoubtcdIv at tho top ol his form, and provided tho Wingatui track is firm, ho "ill have to bo seriously considered in tho decision of tho Duncdin Cup. Front Rank, who has not been at her liest since the Wellington Meeting, was restricted to n six furlong task, which »ho comfortably accomplished in I .'JO. Sho is to accompany the Clifford team to Dunedin, but will not fulfil her Cup engagement. battlement, -assisted by Calcite oyer sis furlongs, got to tho end of nine furlongs in 'J.O. finishing well. Young Lochinvar strode over live furlongs in 1.2 3-5. This trio will comprise F. D. Jones's team for the Dunedin fixture, and they should run prominently in their engagements. Footfall, who is looking in good order, was given u. couple of rounds on the plougTi at a serviceable pace. He will probably bo ono of the favoured contestants for the Dunedin Cup. A rider has not yet been secured for him in this event.

Rapier and Count Carour were again associated in a strong gallop over nine furlongs. They kept together from the jump off, and finished übreast in 1.-33. Glentruin nhowed her usual pace in covering four furlongs in 49 3-3. Jericho had Beau Gesto as a companion over half u mile, covered in 51 3-o.

Don Jose and Money Mart traversed five furlongs in 1.4 3-3, Nincompoop and Precious taking 1.2 4-5 for the same- distance.

Chickwhcat showed improved form by beating Tiff at tho end of sis furJongs, cut out in 1.16 3-3. The Panmure—Heatherbrac two-year-old Broadmoor beat his stablemntc Sudden Storm over six furlongs, covered In 1.19, and looks likely to bo a worthy Chokebore representative in the Dunedin Champagne Stakes. Brightliug easily accounted for Bed Wink over five furlongs in 1.3 1-5. The former has improved with recent galloping and is expected to perform well in his Wingattn engagements. Gold Mint continues to get through attractive track work and reeled off six furlongs, in company with Master John, in 1.20, without being fully extended.

Ophir was too good for Sasctto in a six furlong gallop, taking 1.20 2-5. Assurance was seen to advantage by geting over a mile in 1.43 4-5. being assisted over six furlongs by his stable-mate, Master Clarence. Kadiac and Sayonara were each schooled over a few fences on Wednesday, both giving pleasing exhibitions. Crossbow, stJss Flighty. Dark Spot, Mo Mier Oay Queen, Hoylake, Bolero, Finora, Will Oakalnd. Asjrinn, HuzCountersign, and Gold Brick accomplished useful tasks. N.?. METROPOLITAN T.C. HANDICAPS DECLARED.
