NORTHUMBERLAND RETURNS.
MATS UNRELIABLE. (•rim AstoeuTios mzasAkt-) GISBORNE, February i. Tho Northumberland, which left tor Auckland at 10.30 last evening, accompanied by the tug Terawbiti, has returned to port. The return of the ship at IM p.m created some surprise. ■ ln response to a wireless message, the harbourmaster went out and took Urn ship back to her former mooring* off Waikanae Beach. A diver went down, and found the mate In order, but the skins w«re coming awa* from the sheepskin mat. The Fire Brigade's trailer pump, which lifts 800 gallons ft minute, was sent for, and it substantially reduced the water in No. S hold. lb ia understood that the mats will hnve to be replaced, and this, with other work necessary for th* trip to Auckland, will mean that the Northumberland will stay here for about • week.
