N.Z. COUNCIL

MEETING OF MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the Management Committee of the New Zealand Council wa 3 held last night. Present—Messrs D. Keese (chairman), 11. Taylor, E. R. Cay-ill, J. S. Barrett, W. H. Winsor, A. E. Byrne, and J. F. Peake \hci:. secretary). An Auckland Protest. The Auckland Cricket Association wrote protesting against the non-inclusion of an Auckiancler on the committee to select the Mew Zealand team for tile English tour. The letter stated that it was felt that on account of the close proximity ot Canterbury and Otago, the. representative from Otago could have given way to another from the North Island. The number of cricketers in the North Island was much greater than in the South Inland, and it was submitted that the present playing strength of the North was greater than the South. These comparisons were, no doubt, invidious, but as the committee had seen (it to favour Wellington, Canterbury, and Otago, to the exclusion of Auckland, strong feeling that the North was not getting its sliaro had again been aroused. The letter was received, and the. committor considered that no further reply was necessary.

South Australia's Terms. Concerning the suggested tour by a. South Australian team, ilio South Australian Cricket Association wrote confirming the previous notification, that it could not accept the terms. The letter stated that this decision had been reached only after very careful consideration, and with keen regret. In view of tho assurances given by Mr I'eake on behalf of the Council when he was in Adelaide last year, to the elfect that the New Zealand Council was prepared to make an allowance oE I3s a day to players touring tho Dominion, the cabled advice that only 10s could be paid came as a distinct surprise. Several of the better known players were not prepared to accept the reduced allowance, and consequently tho Association felt it had no alternative but to abandon the tour.

In reply, tho Council wrote expressing surprise concerning the remarks alleged to have been made by Mr Peake in reference to tho allowance to be made to players. The fact of the matter was that the actual amount of the daily allowance was not stated. The Council hoped that the failure on its part to meet the request for an increased daily allowanco would not prevent tho opening up of further negotiations with the Association at a future date.

An , unexpected reunion between brother and sister who had not heard of each other for 16 years took place on board the Sydney boat when she arrived at Wellington yesterday morning. Going aboard tho boat to meet a lady friend, the sister bumped into a tall, sunburnt gentleman who was about .to disembark. Mutual apologies followed, and then recognition. The gentleman was none other than a brother who had gone from England to South Africa just over 10 years ago. His only sister had left England about a'- year later for 'New Zealand, where she had married. No correspondence had passed between the. two, and the brother, taking a holiday, had chosen New Zealand, without any idea that his sister was in tho country.—Press Special. .
