RUNAWAY TRUCK.

QUARRYMEN INJURED. (PBEBS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) THAMES, September 20. A runaway truck- at Waiotahi Quarry, owned by the Thames Borough Council, caused.two men, John Head, aged 40 years, married, and Charles Billing, aged 50 years, married, to be admitted to hospital, both suffering from severe head and body injuries. Following the usual practice, the two men were riding on an empty truck, which they mounted at the top of a 20-chain slope. The brakes were hard on, but owing to the slip- ! ! pery nature of the rails the brakes-re-rused to grip. The truck, quickly eatherrng speed, dashed down the incline at a terrific rate. Billing was thrown off and rendered unconscious. Head stuck to the truck until it crashed into an iron railing at the bottom of the slope, where he was jolted over a 10ft concrete wall, falling against the riverbank nearly a chain distantFirst aid was given the injured men, who were removed to hospital, where Head was found to be. suffering from Icuts about the head and face and severe bruises and abrasions on the back and legs.
