CHANNEL SWIM.
LONDON GIRL'S PLUCKY ATTEMPT, (BT CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPTWGHT.) (AUSTRALIAN AND S.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATIOH.) LONDON, September 19. Remarkable pluck and endurance were shown by Miss Mercedes Gleitze, a London typist, who gave up her third Channel attempt, after 11 hours., two miles from England. Conditions at first were ideal, but during the night a fog descended, and the water became very cold. When the girl was obviously weakening, her friends exhorted her to give up, but wheu informed that she had only two miles to go she absolutely refused to leave. She was then semi-conscious, and «t times appeared to be sleeping while feebly swimming. Owing to the danger that she would collapse and disappear in the darkness, one of her friends lassoed her arms with a rope. and as she was about to make a stroke tito others lifted the nemi-frozen girl into a boat. She was rushed to Dover, where she recovered after attention.
