Mr L. Paynter, Government Orchard Instructor, has recovered from his recent serious illness.

Messrs H. J. Topliss (Inchhonnie), John Hutchinson, J. Black, and J. C. K. Somerville are at Warner's Hotel. Recent arrivals at the Clarendon Hotel include: Messrs W. G. Douglas (Auckland) and R. K. Ireland (Oarnaru). Mr H. L. Cumminga, Inspecting Engineer, who has been in Christchurch for some days on Post and Telegraph Departmental business, will leave to-day for the West Coast. Among the guests at the United Service Hotel are: Messrs H. A. Gamble (Dunedin), R. 0. C. C. Hateley (London), and Mr and Mrs N. Tangue (England). The Hon. Mr Anderson left > Wellington last night to pay a visit to his constituency. He will, on his return, be in Christchurch on Friday, and will proceed to Akaxoa to unveil a memorial. The Rev. Jasper Smyth, who is attending the Christchurch Synod, told the assembly last night that it was exactly sixty-three years since his ordination. Mr Smyth is eighty-seven years of age. Mr William Moloney, of Christchurch, personal representative for Loon Gordon, author and producer of "White Cargo," is at present in Auckland, and I will be in Christchmeh shortly. Mr I Leon Gordon also plays tho principal role in the play. At yestorday's meeting of the Tramway Board, it was decided, on the motion of the chairman (Mr W. J. Walter) that an expression of sympathy be convoyed to Mr Wm. Reece, in the death of his wife. Mr Rcece for many years has been ono of tho Tramway Sinking and Depreciation Fund Commissioners.

At yesterday's meeting of the Ashburton Power Board, reference was made to the death of Mr J. C. N. Grigg, and the following resolution was adopted: "That the members of tho Board desire to convey to Mrs Grigg and her family an expression of their sincere sympathy with them in their recent bereavement, and to record their sense of the loss sustained by the Dominion in general and the Ashburton County in particular by the death of a citizen who was always animated by everything which was for the good of the community."
