Although State officials of the Australian Workers' Union are unanimous iu opposition to the Federal Government's referendum proposals in general, the president of the union,' Senator Barnes, has announced his intention of supporting the referendum on the question of the regulation of industry and commerce. The Australian Labour Party Has suspended the ex-president of the Party, Mr B. C. Magrath, from hia position as on* of the State representatives on the Federal Executive. The charge against him was tiuvt he flouted the orders of the State Executive in not unconditionally opposing the refer, endum proposals at the recent meetings of the Federal Executive. [The Federal Government proposes to introduce immediately a Bill for an alteration of the Constitution extending the powers of the Commonwealth Parliament in relation to industrial matters, and widening the scope of the Arbitration Court. The proposed law, if passed by statutory majorities in both Houses, will be submitted to a referendum of the people in August. Voting on the referendum, as at general elections, will be compulsory .J "*
