$ Air cleaner Sealed VAUfE-IN-HIAD 01 > > > MOTOft CAM 3ff fitter. cm .filter. Buick's Big New Feature The greatest enemy of the modern automobile engine is dirt. This may enter the engine in three different ways—through the carburettor, the oil, or the fuel. In the new Buick the engine is what is known as triple-sealed—that is, every possible precaution is taken to exclude dirt from the moving parts. This triple-sealing consists of an air cleaner, an oil strainer, and a petrol filter. The Air Cleaner The air cleaner is used to ensure clean air in the carburettor, ensuring longer life to the pistons, cylinders, bearings, and sensitive carburettor parts and the engine in general. Much of the sediment that is always present in the lubricating oil is due to dirt finding its way into the engine through the carburettor air intake. On the Buick the air cleaner operates on the same principle as that utilised in the ordinary cream separator. That is, centrifugal force separates two elements bf different specific gravity. The air is drawn into the engine, the cleaner gives it a rapid rotating motion. Centrifugal force separates the dust particles from the air. The spiral motion of the dust alongside the inside surface of the cleaner brings it to the rear circular end, and it is forced through a small outlet into a removable container. The clear air moves spirally through the centre portion of the cleaner through a directing plate and leaves the cylinder in a straight line to enter the carburettor. The Oil Filter An oil filter has been specially designed and developed for Buick engines which removes harmful sediment from the oil, and which, at car speeds of over 20 miles per hour, is capable of filtering all of the oil in the crankcase every twenty minutes. This ensures clean oil through all the moving parts. Large oil passages and low velocity of the oil going through 450 square inches of filtering surface provides efficient service by the filter under normal conditions for approximately 15,000 miles. The filter is located on the dash and takes the oil from the oil system at the rear end of the motor, cleaning the oil before it goes through the rocker arm bearings. This filter in no way interferes with the oiling system of the engine, as k is provided with a by-pass so that in case of clogging the oil passes directly through, the rocker a The Fuel Filter The fuel filter is placed in the fuel line to prevent dirt and water reaching the carburettor. It is placed below the vacuum tank to catch any sediment which originates in the tank aind to avoid the agitation of the petrol m the strainer when the petrol it- dumped from the inner to die outer vacuum tank. The strainer it provided with a detachable glass bowl, making the dirt and water accumulation visible, and With a shut-off valve for stopping the petrol flow wheh cleaning u necessary. With all these precautions it is very difficult for grit and dirt, as weH as dust particles from the road, to get to the moving parts of the new Buick engine. A» the reasons for wear in modern motor cart are done away with, it can be expected that the New Buick Triple-sealed Engines will last long past the ordinarily acoepted span of life for an automobile.
