NORTH CANTERBURY.

OXFORD. Hie annual meeting of the Oxford branch of tHe New Zealand Farmers'. Lnion was held 011 Friday, April 23rd. The president, Mr E. G. Wells, was in the chair, and there was a fair attendance of members. The financial statement showed that 91 subscriptions had been paid during the year, and the number of unfinancial members had been reduced. The total receipts from all sources was £9O Ite Gd. The expenditure was £lOl 13s Cd. but owing to a credit balance of £36 19s lOd at the beginning of the year, there was now 3 credit balance of £3l lfo -id. Sknrr, and W. J. iSkurr; delegates to the provincial executive, Me.-si-s [l. G. Parish and H. G. Cross. A general discussion took piaco on the branch's programme for the current year. A meeting tbe Oxford "VY.C.T.U. was held in the Coronation Hall, the president being in the chair. Miss Caverbill, who attended the recent Dominion Convention, read a report of the proceedings. It was decided to send a letter to the branch congratulating it on having won tbe membership banner. and thanking it for its valuable assistance on Show Day. A vote of thanks was passed to all those who had assisted with goods, money, or personal help towards the success of the refreshment booth. It was resolved to hold a meeting shortly to appoint a Band of Hope Committee. COOPER'S CREEK There was a large attendance of the friends and relatives of Mr and Mrs Leslie Lilly in the Cooper's Creek Social Hall on Wednesday night, April 21st, to bid them farewell prior to their leaving the district to tako np residence in Gisborne. Mr G. A. Ryde presided, and on behalf of the residents of Viewhill and Cooper's Creek, presented the truests with a travelling rug and a well-filled purse. Dancing, cards, and musical numbers filled a pleasant evening. CUST. The annual tea-meeting, in connexion with St. David's Presbyterian Church, was held on Friday evening in the Institute Hall. The ladies in charge were kept continuously busy until nearly 8 o'clock, when a concert was given. During the evening, Mosdamos C. H. and A. Forbes ran a stall of sweets, jams, produce, etc., and did brisk business. Tha- following ladies wore in charge of the tea tables:— Mesdames Heinisch, • Mcintosh, Clist, Burns, (J- Cowens, A. Smith, Gartery, Keep Fi tiler, Gilbert, Rodgers, Misses Burns and Cowens. Mrs Wayland was the organiser. At intervals during the concert, addresses were given by Eevs. A. H. Achcof England), G. K. Aiken (Ka'ia'poi), and Mr George Wood (Oxford). Air A. Simmonds presided, and • ; thi> following programme was given:— 'Violin arid piano,- ''The Middy," 'Mr J. Mcßryde and Mrs E. C. Ducat; song, "Annio Laurie," Mrs Chap'pell; song, "Asleep in the Deep," Mr T. Blain; duet, "Eoso of My Heart," Mrs Henry and Mr T. B. Lock; recitation. Miss Mackenzie; song, "Fairy Pipers," Miss Eeed; song, "Wondering Why," Mrs Trollope; violin solo, "Scotch Fantasia," Mr J. Mcßrydo; song, "My Dear Soul," Mrs Henry; song, "Look; Down Dear Eyes," Mr R. Watkiris; song, "There's a Wee Bit of Land," Mrs Chappell; song, "Rose in the Bud," Mrs Trollope; song, "By the Old Gate," Mr T. Blain; song, "Home Sweet Home," Mrs Henry. Mesdames Ducat and Trollope were the accompanistes. At the conclusion of the programme, Mr Simmonds thanked all who liad worked to uiake the evening a success. From amongst those elected to the vestry of St. James' church, the name of Mr W. 0. Sail was omitted. WAIKUKU. Miss Lorna Hodder, travelling secretary for the Young People's Bible Class Union, visited the Waikuku Mutual Improvement Society and addressed those present on Bible class work and the help gained by joining the Union. The Rev. W. B. Cuming occupied the chair. Miss Judson will occupy the chair next Thursday, when a paper on "The Holy Spirit," by Miss Margaret Orchard, will be read. LEESTON. On Friday, a bazaar in aid of the fund, for the installation of a hot-water heating system at Leeston School, for which householders and other friends in the school district had been working i'or several weeks past, took place. A creditable display of goods of all descriptions was effectively arranged upon decorated stalls. There was a splendid attendance at night, when the stallholders and those in charge of the numerous competitions did excellent business. Mr D. H. Beid, chairman of the Sehool Committee, in calling upon Dr. Yolckman to declare: the bazaar ■open, apologised for the absence* of Sir R. Rhodes,M.L.C., Mr D. Jones, M.P., and Mr Spencer( the district's representative on the Education Board). He warmly thanked the ladies for rallying to the committee's aid, and making such a good display. Dr. Volckman, while commending the worthiness of the cause for which the bazaar was being-held, and praising the workers, expressed the opinion: that the installation of proper heating systems was really just .as much the business of the Education Department, as was the roofing of. the school. He would defy anyone to do his best under conditions that were not favourable, such as work; ing'in a very cold room. The heating system used at Leeston School might almost be described as prehistoric. With the new system they wero installing, they would bo able to maintain an even temperature. He trusted that the bazaar would be completely successful. The stall holders were:—Home produce: Mesdames Gilbert and Llovd, Misses Brown, E. Jackman, and G. Gilbert; sweets: Mrs Ryde and Miss Parkin; needlework: Mesdames Woodard, iMottram, and Jones, and ' Miss Ferrier; flowers: Mrs and Miss Hurford; books and bran tub: the children; refresh: ments: Many willing. helpers. It is understood that the financial goal aimed at has been exceeded. SOUTHBREDGE. At ft meeting, over which Mr W.
