BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL.

A short service was conducted at the Memorial Shrine at the Boys' High School in the morning. The School song was sung, and the lesson was read by the headmaster (Mr G. J. Lancaster). In the course of his address, l)r. W. S. f>ecd (president, of the Old ]!>ys' Association- said that Anzac Day was a day of pride and inspiration rather thaji one of mourning. The South Canterbury War Memorial was unveiled to-day in gloriously fine weather bclore a very large attendance. The function was held conjointly with the Anzac Day services, and a very large military parade of over 900 was held. The services opened with the inspection of the Guard of Honour by the Hon. F. J. llolleston, Minister for Defence, followed bv the Dead March in "Saul" by the South Canterbury Regimental Band. This was followed by Scripture reading and prayers. The Hon. F. J. Rolleston performed the unveiling ceremony, stating that the memorial ajid the site chosen were ideal; in fact, one of the best in' New Zealand. The chairman of the War Memorial Committee, Mr W. C. Raymond, then handed the memorial over to the Mayor of the town (Mr G. J. Wallace). The "Last Post" was then sounded, and volleys were fired by the firing party. The service concluded with the National Anthem. The Memorial takes the form of a Corinthian marble column; resting on a granite pedestal with a bronze cross surmounting the shaft. The lower base is composed of the hard, volcanic rock of South Canterbury, while above is a pedestal of granite reaching to the bottom of the column, the hard granite representing endurance. The column itself is marble, and the shaft is fluted as a symbol of ruggedness. The bronze cross which surmounts the column is of Greek design nine feet high, bringing the highest point of the monument 66 feet above the pavement.
