WEST CHRISTCHURCH DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.

At tbe monthly meeting of the Christchurch West District High School, there were present: Mr J. H. Jones (in the chair), Messrs if. Hall, D. McKenzie, A. Hay, J. Taylor, H. Whithara (secretary), and the headmaster, Mr F. D. Waller. Apologies were received for the absence of Messrs J. Middleton, H. Lane, and W. Comber. Mr A. Hay reported that he had seen the owners of the property on the east of the school, and that they had consented to pay their share towards tho renovation of the fence. A letter was received from the Education Department agreeing to grant the subsidy on the money raised for improving the school playground, and from the assistantsecretary of the Education Board, stating that the question of going on with the final wing of the school would be considered at the next meeting of the Board. Dr. Chilton wrote stating that he had already £B7 35s in hand for the erection of the proposed "memorial fence," and he bad every hope of obtaining other donations. The chaivman read a draft copy of the annual report and the balance-sheet, which ■were considered and adopted. The headmaster reported that tho number on the roll in the primary department for the month was 6SB, with an average attendance of 630, nnd that of the secondary department 248, with an average attendance of 236. It was decided to purchase a piano for the school, and Messrs Hay and Taylor were appointed to act with two of the teachers .in making the purchase. The chairman, on behalf of the committee, presented Mr D. McKenzie, a retiring member, with a pipe as a token of respect and a mark of the committee's appreciation of the immense amount of ■work he had done during the jubilea celebration.
