RECORD OF PROGRESS.

HEATHCOTE COUNTY'S WORK. The chairman of the Heathcoto County Council (Mr C. Flavell), at the last meeting of the present Council, presented a report oil tho works carried out during the past twelve months. Amongst the matters mentioned in his report were the following: Tub financial yean ending March 31st, 1926, has heon one of the most successful that tha Council has had for a considerable number of years, A number of important works hare been completed. The revenue collected, not including loan monies, during the year amounted to £25,910, and expenditure to £22,277, the county having a credit balance of £5340 in the bank at March 31st. The rates struck for the year amounted to £14,236, and £14,106 was collected, leaving £l3O outstanding at the end of March. The greater portion qt this amount has now been collected. A new valuation of the Avon, Bromley, Valley, Hillsborough, and Mount Pleasant Ridings has been completed, but is still in the hands of the Valuation ' Department. This will bring the values of the older buildings more in conformity with the new ones, and the rates will be able to be reduced considerably. This has been the best year the county has experienced in the way of erection of new buildings, 148 new buildings having been erected, amounting to £124,608, in the following,proportion:—Avon £7768, Bromley £5482, Valley £4138, Hillsborough £42,251, Cashmere £57,281, Mt. Pleasant £7688. Two loans were raised during the year, one of £7OO, for the channelling of the Opawa road. The other loan was of £llBO for tho erection of a hall at Arauni, During the year the county's agreement with the Public Works Department for the purchase of current has been altered, and the county is now purchasing on the maximum load. This is of greater benefit to the county.
