ACCLIMATISATION MATTERS.

TO THE BOITO}I OT 4I THX tftßSS."' • Sir,—At last meeting' of the N.C. Acclimatisation Society, Mr J. Redpath is reported to have complained, '<That Mr'Ensor, of 'St.- Jainej station, . was deuianding a fee of 15s from sportsmen wishing to shoot deer, geese, ducks, etc., on Lake Guyon, St. James." The society replied that they had no power to interfere with lights' over private property. Mr Eedpath's statement is misleading, and for that reason I-would be grateful for a.littl.e space to correct a wrong impression which he may conyey. : St.' James station with its abundance of game, magnificent scenery, hot springs, winter sports oh * snow and ice, is eminently suitable as a tourist resort, and is open for that purpose. The 15s per day that Mr Kedpath complains of, includes all accommodation, board, transport, and guides, to various scenic and sporting places. I trust this will remove the impression that I charge a fee to shoot game on my property. Whilst on the society's affairs, in the same report the question of shags and trout was discussed. Some months ago I .wrote the society on this subject, and quite a lot of discussion and correspondence ensued. The society blame overstocking the. rivers. This cannot be so when great rivers like the Clarence and Waiau are very thinly stocked with fish and the fishing is becoming poorer each year. That the black shag is the cause of this, I feel sure. The gourmand is poaching all day and every day. Only the very large fish and those in deep water, escape him. Destroy, the shag and our river fishing will improve.— Tours, etc., C. H. ENSOB. St. James station, April 23rd.
