BUSH FIRES IN U.S.
• —■ — THREE KILLED AND MANY INJURED. ( (»T CABLE—PRESS ABSOCTATION~COpraiOHT.) (AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. OASLE ASSOCIATION.) NEW YORK, April 21. Three lives were lost, many people injured, and heavy property damage caused by forest fires which arc raging over a considerably section of New York and New Jersey States, as the result of ono of the worst spring* droughts ever experienced in Eastern United States. Three men were burned to death when a motor-truck was overtaken by the fire. They endeavoured to race through burning scrub pine, but were unsuccessful. Many firemen were overcome by smoke and heat. Numerous village homes were destroyed, also grist mills and a summer hotel at Bedford, New York. The latter was valued at 100,000 dollars. The New York fire now covers two square miles, and the New Jersey fire is equally extensive. The latter, which was fanned by a 40-mjles-an-hour wind, has now been checked, after hundreds of volunteer firemen, including school boys, fought it for 72 hours.
