BUTTER PRICES.
N.Z. ALLEGATIONS REFUTED DAIRY BOARD'S STATEMENT. (BI CABLE—»ESB ASSOCIATION—COPYBIOHT.) (AOTTBALUK ASD S.E. CASLB ASSOCIATION.) (Received April 22nd, 8 p.m.) LONDON, April 21. Representatives of the New Zealand Dairy Board repudiate statements from New Zealand alleging that the compulsory marketing scheme, beginning on August Ist, means the daily fixing of the selling prico of butter and extracting the last penny from the consumer. Mr Wright says that such a policy would defeat the purpose of the Board's existence, which was to encourage consumption, stabilise prices, ensure ) more satisfactory returns, and stimulate production. The success of the policy was impossible if it antagonised con- ' sumers in the manner absurdly suggest--1 ed from New Zealand. E Mr lorns said: "Our purpose is to enable New Zealand farmers to meet 3 world competition here. They have - hitherto been at the mercy of the speculators, who took advantage of the ir- ' regular shipments, and alternating gluts 7 and shortages to manipulate prices, fre- • quently driving the consumers to buy margarine. We aim to check that by 5 regulating supplies."
