MAIN HIGHWAYS.
FURTHER TAX ON MOTORISTS PROPOSED. (press association telegeau.) TIMARU, April 22. At a meeting of the Main Highways Board here to-day, on the proposal of Mr H. B. 8. Johnstone, chairman of the Waimate County Council, a motion was unanimously passed; "That, in fairness to county ratepayers and for the benefit of road .users, a much larger proportion of the cost of upkeep of the roads should bo collected from owners of all motor vehicles, the moneys collected to be allocated to the County Councils by way of additional subsidy on rates, such subsidy not to be governed by the £IO,OOO limit applied to the present subsidy, but to be given on all moneys collected by County Councils by way of general rates."
