PILGRIMS ENTERTAINED.
EARLY DAYS RECALLED. Last evening a largo assembly of Canterbury Pilgrims was entertained by song and story at the Jellicoo Hall. The president, Mr J. A. Flesher, presided. The distinguished audience showed great appreciation of the musical items, though most of them smacked of modernity and did' not • contain those old numbers eneb as "Drink to Me Only" or "Do Ye Ken John Peel?" which are so dear to their hearts. Later, however, they were reminded of the deeds of "their yesterdays" by a series of interesting reminiscences of pioneer days in Canterbury by one of their number, the Rev. F. S. Brittan, who was an infant passenger in one of the first fouT ships. Ho enlivened tho lecturette with many personal reminiscences. The concert part of the programme was opened by Mrs Wickenden, who rendered two violin solos in her best manner, the pieces being "Londonderry Airs," "The Flower," and "La Danse." Mr Gurnsey and Mies Dori3 Lovell-Smith sang well together in a duet, and Mr Gurnsey was also heard later in a solo entitled "Waiting." Mr H. Dickson was a popular performer on the 'cello. Miss Warren acted as accompanist. All the items were enthusiastically ' encored. Mr Brittan's lecture, which was illustrated by lantern slides, included the main events and _ persons in tho early history of the province. Mr Brittan was accorded a vote of thanks. Mr Flesher reported that as a result of last year's Jubilee celebrations the Association would benefit to the extent of about £BO. He also' said that attempts would shortly be made to establish branches of the Pilgrims' Association in the main Canterbury cities.
