Tho conflict between Federal Awards and the New South Wales Forty-four Hour Week Act was continued when an application, made on behalf of the Metal Trades' Employers' Association to the Federal Arbitration Court for prohibition to prevent the Industrial Arbitration Commissioner ot New South Wales from dealing with the applications of the State Branch of the Australasian Society of Engineers for an award in wheh the 44-hour week was claimed, was refused. | Mr Justice Powers, in delivering judgment, said his reasons for refusing tho application, inter alia, were that no State Industrial Commission at present existed and the old State Arbitration Court had expired. He did not think it advisable at the present time to grant the application, but gave leaive for the Association to renew the application if any State Court proceeded to hear the claims of the Union. UNIONS OBJECT TO INCREASE. SYDNEY April 21. At a meeting of representatives .of nil unions covered by the Federal awards it was decided to instruct the members of various organisations to work only 41 hours a week. It is officially stated that the unions ape definitely opposed' to reverting to 1&e 48»hour week. Committees have been appointed to consider the best methods to be taken in order to securo 48 hours' wages for 41 hours' work.
