CHEVIOT.

A meeting of the Cheviot Ladies' Hockey Club was held recently, Miss V* Petrie presiding over a fair attendance. The balance-sheet! showing a good credit balance, was read and adopted. Officers for the ensuing year ■were elected as follows:—Patron, Mr G. W. Forbes, M.P.; president, Mr J. Y. Moir; vice-presidents, Miss Meikle and Messrs D. McLaren, A. D. Anderson, and J, Paton; hon. secretary, Miss V. Petrie j club captain, Miss 0. Kerr; vice-captain, Miss F. Wilkinson; selector, the club captain; committee, Misses Petrie, H. Moir, and S. Flaherty. It was decided to open the season on Saturday, April 24th. Mr W. Walls presided over the final meeting of the Mackenzie School Committee, and there were present Messrs F. S. Wilson, G. Brown, J. C. G. White. G. Ferguson (hon. secretary), and the headmaster, Mr F. R. Berg. The headmaster's report showed the roll number to be 100 and the average attendance 88. Votes of thanks were passed to the headmaster and the hon. secretary for their services to the committee during the year. The local Rugby competition was contnued on Saturday last, when Mackenzie and Domett met on the tatter's ground, and after an interesting game Domett proved victorious by 11 points to 6. Tries were scored for Domett bv J. IJpritchard (2) and 0. Denton, and A. Meikle converted one. J. Flaherty scored for Mackenzie and T. Kerr converted. The competition will be continued on Saturday, when Spotswood will meet Mackensie on the Show Grounds. Mr W. A. Macfarlane will be the referee.

Mr M. E. Lyons, of Christchurch, has accepted the invitation of the Cheviot Branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association to give the address at the'combined memorial service on Sunday (Anzao Day). During the service an opportunity will be given for the placing of wreaths and flowers on the memorial. A collection will be taken up and devoted to the war memorial gardens. The usual short ceremony is to be held at the Spotswood memorial in the morning. On the occasion of his leaving the district, Mr J. James was entertained by the members of the Cheviot Knox Presbyterian Church Choir and presented with a small token in recognition of his services to tho choir. The presentation was made by the Rev. E. Swinerd.

There was a good attendance at the first of a series of euchre parties and dances held under the auspices of the Domett Football Club. The winners of »t €ucnre tournament were Miss I Ashworth and Mr S. Denton, the consolation prizes Koing to Mrs H. C Kenner and Mr Cliff Jackman. A luokv spot waltz was won by Miss M. Unntchard and Mr J. Abernethv The musio was supplied by Mr W.' Hushes, and an extra was contributed by Miss •M. Ashw.orth. In response to many requests, the '!ffis ? mtii ?" ASHLEY BANK.

A party of ten children in charge of Mr J. Crigliugton left by the excursion train on Monday morning for tho Exhibition. The tennis court at tho school for the uso of the children has been rechipped and marked out. On Saturday there will 1 be a meeting of tho members of the Ashley Tennis Club in the schoolat 8 o'clock. Anzac Day service will be held at St. Simon and St. Jude's Anglican Church on Sunday at 6.30, at which time the evening service will be held until further notice. The annual parishioners' meeting will be held after tho service. On Tuesday evening an enjoyable surprise party was given in honour of Miss Nancy McNally. The function took the form of a kitchen evening. Mis 3 McNally was the recipient of many useful gifts. Musical items were contributed and many enjoyable games and dancing were indulged in until a lato hour. A lucky spot waltz was won by Miss Irene Criglington and Mr C. Lundy.
