LONGER LIFE.

♦ OPPORTUNITIES OP MODERN AUSTRALIAN. (by cable—press association —copyright.) (AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) SYDNEY, April 20. The "Daily Guardian," deducing from figures recently issued by the Commonwealth Statistician, claims that the Australian of to-day had gained 12 years of life compared with the whiskered gentleman of 1890, and his shingled better half 12§ years over her ancestress in bustles. The Australian-born to-day can expect 59.1 years of life, also 19 out of every 100 will reach their eightieth birthday, compared with 10 per cent. 30 years ago. Among the multitude of factors contributing to this greater longevity, high places are given to improved surgery, dentistry, and sanitation; also to better living and working conditions, athletics, and better health and education generally.
