COUNTY COUNCILS

WAIMAIRI. A meeting o£ the Waimairi 'County Council was held last evening. This was the final meeting of the present 'Council. Those present were: Messrs J. Seymour (chairman), 0. Burrows, B. W. Hawke, W. J. Walter, 6. Shipley, W. P. Spencer, C. E. Crosse, W. A. Nicholls, and H. Paterson; also Mr Q. S. Cowper, the County Clerk. The chairman stated that 216 buildings had been erected during 1925-26, the total value being £189,931. The general rate struck was £15,644. The cost of the main highway maintenance amounted to £2676, less a subsidy of £IB2O. v The number of electrical consumers was 2498, of whom 206 had been connected this year.

Tho Health Department wrote recommending improvements at the Canterbury Frozen Meat Co.'s works, Belfast. It was decided to forward a copy of the letter to the Company. ' The Council decided to accept the dedication of Charon street from Seafteld, Ltd,, on condition that the Company gave a guarantee that the road would be shingled within twelve months. The foreman of the Works Committee reported that the kerbing and channelling had been completed on the west side of Helmore's road. The path and side of the road had been graded, and the spoil carted away. A start had been made with tfie channelling work on Landon's road, from tho railway to North road. Sixty feet of 9in pipes had been laid across Creyke road to replace an old line of pipes which had broken in and were stopping the flow of water. In tho Fendallon riding, Queen's avenuo and Jackson's road had been scarified, graded, and also rolled down. A light dressing of screenings would be required when the roads were consolidated. The report was adopted. A deputation, consisting of Councillor A. F. Carey and the City Treasurer (Mr J. Anderson), representing the City Council, and Mr L. B. Hart, representing the Papanui Committee, waited on the Council and asked for assistance in bearing the cost of Improvements and repairs to the Papanui Town Cr. Carey stated the Hall Committee bad worked extremely hard, but was -unable to meet the rates, amounting to £53, at the end of the year. The roof the hall was leaking, and the cost of repairing it would be £llO A heating system was necessary, and would cost £350. Floor covering and chair battens would cost an additional £75. The committee which had reported to the City Council was satisfied that this work should be done. The City Council were prepared to pay three-nfths of the amount if the Waimairi Council would pay two-fifths. The chairman, Mr J. Seymour, stated that if the money was forthcoming, it would com* out of the Papanui Biding. Mi" B. W. Hawke (Papanui Biding) said that it was impossible for the Biding to pay *275 which was the amount asked lor. ~ The Council decided to pay its share ot "163, rates and repairs. For the rest of the work it agreed to pay a subsidy of 5s in the £ on money raised by public effort.
