BALCAIRN GARDEN FETE.

A garden fete was, held on Saturday in the beautiful grounds and the resident of Mr and Mrs A R Turnbull, "Bingley" estate, and the results achieved were eery gratifying tc all concerned. The weather conditions were ideal, and many visitors from the aurrodnding districts attended. In the absence of Mr G. W, Forbes, M.P., Mr J. D. Wylie declared the garden fete open, and in doing so wished those responsible a very successful afternoon. The public were well catored for. Orcat attraction as well as amusement was provided by a number of side-Bhowa, besides various competitions, which helped considerably towards the success of the afternoon. v> . The proceedings . were enlivened by tuo music supplied by the Sefton Jazz Band and by Highland music . supplied by Pipers D. Peters and T. Collie. The following were in charge of the various stalls:— Cakes, Mesdamos Brown and Fitzpatrick, and Miss Doon; produce and fruit, Mesdainea Hobbs, Cooper, and Gorrie; fruit salad and ico-cream, Misses Hibbard (2) and Fleming (2); soft drinks and sweets, Meadames Dcrtnott, Smith, Alsweiler, and Miss E. Morrison; needlework, plain and fancy, Mesdamea Sangster and Penfold, and Misses M. Kelcher, Niven, F. Kelcher, P. May, M. May, and E. Park; bran tub, Mrs Hurley and Miss M. Jamieson; afternoon tea, Mcsdames Turnbull, Ward; Ritchie, and Misses Methven, Hawker, and Virtue. Much .'nterest was taken in the baby show, which was held in the latter part of the'afternoon. The judge was Mrs P. H. Johnson, of Brackenfjeld. Tho awards w«re as follows:—Six-twelve months: Mrs Wimsett 1, Mrs A. Thomas 2. Under six months: Mrs Holborough 1. Mrs C. Ashworth 2. The race for the greasy pig was won by Master Albert Edgeworth. Tho sheep-guessing competition was won by Mr N. Kelcher, and Mr C. Ashworth was the winner of the stepping competition. The highest points in the shooting competition were secured by Mr G, Luke. A dance was held in the school in the evening. The attendance was the largst on record, and the accommodation was overtaxed During the eevning the names of tlio winners of the competitions held in connexion with the garden fete were announced: Rug, Mr J. Binnie (Scfton); aeagrass chair, Mrs J. Fitzpatrick; doll's pram, Mrs Turnbull: bride doll, Mra Penfold (Leitbfield); oil painting (No. 1), Miss E. Criglington (Ashley); Fuji eet, Miss K Johnston (Spreydon); oil painting (No. 2), Mrs H. Lang (Saltwater Creek); blankets, Mr D. Bailev; hand-painted cushion, Mr L. Turpin (Waipara): box chocolates, Mr E. Garrett; ham, Mrs Alsweiler; footbal, Master T. Stanley; iced cake, Mrs J- r ''- eon (Sefton).
