' Mrs W. .Todd, for many years proprietress of the Grand Hotel, Westport, and other hotels in th'e' Buller distl'ict, was on Friday evening' bidden farewell at the Albion'"Hotel, Westport, by a large and representative gathering, of citizens, and "presented with a purse of sovereigns. The. presentation was made by Mr J. H. Enright. Mrs Todd left Westport yesterday to take over a hotel at Richmond. ~ Mr and Mrs W. C. Flower, of Christchurch, are visiting their daughter, Mrs R. McDonagh, Westport. Blackball Bridge Afire. The Blackball combined railway and traffic bridge, which suffered serious' damage from floods early in December last, was the scene of another exciting incident at about 3.30 p.m. yesterday, when it was discovered that the decking of the bridge had caught • afire, close to the Ngahere approach. The Ngahere railway staff, accompanied by a party of volunteer hApers, lost no time in arriving on tho* scene, but by this time smoke and flames were emerging from the decking and it was feared that with the meagre fire-fighting appliances at hand, the flames would get beyond control as a strong wind was fanning the flames. Meanwhile a portable chemical fire extinguisher ,was brought into action, and the outbreak'was suppressed before any seriovs damage resulted. A spark from, a passing engine is supposed to have been responsible for tjie outbreak, which fortunately occurred when the railway staff was on duty. Territorials. A batch of 150 West Coast territorials, who have been undergoing a week's training at Burnham,> returned by yesterday's express. Another fifty territorials, who have, been attending the Burnham campy will visit the Dunedin Exhibition before returning to the Coast. Major Robertson (Grcymoutli), Major Campbell (Reefton), Lieut. Ferguson (Hokitika), Sergt.-Majors A. Evans, V.C. and L. R. Shuttleworth (Greymouth), returned from Burnham by yesterday's express. Sawmill Accident. A .young, man named Thos. Syme, employed by tho Forest Sawmilling Co., Ltd., while stacking timber on the skids at NgalJere, yesterday, sustained a fractured leg through being struck by a falling tier of timber. He was taken to Greyniouth by the train from Reefton last evening and removed to the hospital, where his condition to-day is reported as satisfactory. Girl Guides: A meeting of young ladies will be | held at Greyniouth this week, for the purpose of forming a Girl' Guides' corps. The meeting is being' called at the request of the Mayoress (Mrs W. H. Parfitt), who will preside. . Lady Marjorie Dalrymple (Girl Guides' Commissioner) is visiting the West Coast this week iir connexion with the movement, and it is understood that a corps .will be established in each of the West Coast centres. Greymoutb Municipal Band. The Mayoress (Mrs W. H. Parfitt) is convening a meeting this week, • of Greymouth ladies, with a view to making arrangements for entertaining the members of the Greymouth Municipal. Band at a public function to be held at an early date. * Vital Statistics. During the month of February, there were ten deaths, twenty.one births, and ten marriages, at Greymouth. The figures for the corresponding period the previous rear, were 7, 20,. and 8, respectively. - School Jubilee. v At a meeting of the* Grey Main School "Committee it was decided that a meeting of ex-pupils and others be

held on Thursday evening, to discuss the matter of celebrating the 50th anniversary of the opening of the school, and to appoint a working committee in connection with carrying out Jubilee celebrations. Tennis. Greymouth A team was defeated by Hokitika A team, at Hokitika yesterdav, bv 17 sets to 11, the games resulting, Hokitika 158, Greymouth 129. League Football. At a well-attended meeting of the Grey League Club, held to-day, the following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Patron, Mr F. Roche: president, Mr H. Moore; secretary, Mr W, Rvan; auditor, Mr F. Hugh; treasurer, Mr J. Thomas; delegates to Centre, Messrs J. Thomas and H. Moore; vicepresidents, Messrs C. Pugh and J. Bfown; club-captain, Mr C. Giffney; committee, the officers elected with the addition of Messrs J. Crooks and McHirus. * The first game of the season was played at Seven Mile this afternoon, between teams representing the Grey and Rover clubs, the former winning by twenty points" to three. The proceeds will be handed to a Kover player who was injured at one of lasj; season's fixtures.
