BANKS PENINSULA R-C. FRESCO WINS CUP. The weather as good m could have been wished for for the Banks' Peninsula Racing Club's Autumn Meeting, which was held at Motukarara on Saturday. There was a very good attendance of the public, Christchuxch sportsmen attending in large numbers, while the country districts were also well represented. The totalise tor investments were disappointing, and showed a drop from £17,379 invested at last year's Meeting, to £11,146, but this can to a certain extent be attributed to the small fields that contested the Peninsula Cup and Forsyth Flying: Handicap, there being only six starter# in the former race and three in the latter. Altogether the racing was interesting, and Fresco's win in the Cup proved most popular. The racing track was in o'ood order, and favourable for fast timemaking, the recent rains having ejected considerable improvement. Following are the results: MOTUKARARA HANDICAP, of 115 sovs; second 20, third 10. Gi. 1. G. D. Greenwood's b f PRECIOUS by Sutala—Roden 3yrs 7 13 J. Beale 1 4. Dr. M. G. More delightful weather conditions than thoaa experienced for (he concluding day's racing of the Xelson Jockey Club could not have been desired. In spite of this inducement, the attendance was a little over the average of previous years, southern visitors showing a large deficiency. In all respects the management was first class, though the absence of the president, Mr £'. 0. Hamilton, wag generally regretted. Xo fault oould be found with the racing, which was interesting and full of surprises. Unfortunately a couple of ill-advised protesta made matters drag somewhat and delayed the starts of the concluding ervents. Mr R. E. Hatch's efforts the barrier were generally succeßful, but be is still apt to give riders rather more liberty than is necessary at the post. As generally anticipated, there was a shortage in the totalisator receipts, which reached £13,173, compared with £14,390 on the second day last yeat. The proceedings sfarted auspiciously by , (v rattling finish in the Trial Stakes. On previous day's form, Helen Winkie was | Supported with confidence, but there was solid money also for Molto and Royal Game. Backers of the favourite got a poor | run, as she was slow to begin and never ?ot into the fighting line. Royal Game just headed. Oread and Red Courier for three parts of the journey, and right to the distance post it looked as if he was at iast going to reward Mr Ballingcr with a win. It was not to be, however, for under punishment Red Courier stayed on better to win by half a length, with Molto at a slightly bigger interval away third. The winner is a well-bred five-year-old son of Clarenceux and Novoe Yremya, owned and'trained by the local sportsman, Mr J. A. Stringer, whose success, though accompanied by a good price, was well received. Only for putting up 41b overweight Royal Game may have prevailed: A field of nine pacers went out to contest The Mftitai Trot, and there was little in the betting as between L. Berkett's bracketed pair, Hope Dillon and Clive Bell, Mi3s Louie and Lord Denver. Xqne cf the long starfr division made the best use of their handicaps, with a result that Hope Dillon wa3 out in front from Velocity and Miss Louie at the end of half a. mile. All along the back the order was the same, with Mabon's Day making up his ground only to go to a break when turning into the home straight. This made matters look easy for Hope Dillon, but Velocity was not done with. A furlong from the post he joined the local horse and staying on better won a- good race by two lengths, with Mabon's Day twice that distance back third. Miss Louie again showed want of stamina, while Lord Denver quite failed to reproduce his first day's form, putting up a feeble display. Each of the placed horses improved on their handicap times. -

The 'Nelson Cup, which claims the. distinction of being one of the oldest established handicaps in the , Dominion, attracted one of the best fields of recent years In the matter of condition nothing looked better than Tresham, Waetea, Para, and Beaumont, while Gamecock was evidently much' better as a result, of his hard race on Friday. Right from the .start of the betting I'reaharn v was always a good favourite, and after him Waetea,, Rouex, Beau* mont, .and Gamecock were almost in equal demand. From an excellent start Para soon took up the-role of pacemaker, going out of the straight atid all along to the back jtm clear of Beaumont,- Waetea, and Bon March. All round the top turn Para was galloping very freely in front, her nearest, attendants at this stage being Waetea, Gamecock, and Beaumont. Then Gamecock commenced to improve his. position, end a furlong from home there Was little to choose between the chances- of Para, Waetea,' and Gamecock. Waetea - was first to fpdo out, and staying oh hrttiis best style Gamecock defeated Para, by three pafts of a length. Nearly two lengths back came followed by Rouex, who made up a,, surprising: lot of ground over the last half mile. Beaumont was evidently racing beyond his best journey, while .Tresham never looked to have a winning chance. Tho Tahuna Hack Welter did not. attract a great deal of interest, but it gave rise to another spirited contest. In spite of their previous failures, Axle ' and Moonface were in almost As good demand as phantasy, while for some reason Moutoa Lady was out of favour. When the, field had settled to business Phantasy wy just heading Axle and Moonface, with Lady Moutoa well back. There was not much change till well into the home straight, where itawhero and Moutoa Lady commenced to gather up the leaders This pair their drew away and in a desperate finish Moutoa Lady got the verdict by a neck, thereby registering her second win and a second at the. Meeting. She was tore on going out and also on returning to the birdcage. Eawhero [>ut up a fine effort, but Axle was again lound wanting under pressure. Only four out -of the nine carded went out for. .tho' Flying Handicap, and their number was further reduced by Misgovern taking 1 charge of her .rider and bolting twice round. By permission of the stewards she was allowed to be withdrawn, and the few investments on her were returned. King Cheops was installed a much better favourite than Megalo, while Probate was at an outside' price. All through the early stages Megiio and King Cheops were racing abreast, well clear of the outsider. Two furlongs from the .post Ring Cheops bad Megalo's Measure, and was proclaimed ihe winner. In the meantime Probate had been gradually creeping up and, finishing cm much better than the tavourile, scored by two lengths. Mo3t ot [he eight competitors in the .W'ukaiu Trot came in for solid support, actual tavouritisnj resting with Latest bastion, carried only a few pounds mote than tlope Dillon, Miss Louie, and iiabon a Day. Miss Louie and Lady Balhn were slow to begin, and Latest Fashion suticred interference just after the 'start. .Nellie Parsons was Boon out in front, and at the end of three furlungs hei stiblemate, Hope Dillon, was heading tho others. For over half the journey it locked as if L. Berkctt's pair would have the finish to themselvc?, as none of the hack-markers was making the least impression on them. On settling to business, Lady Ballin showed a rare turn of speed and after taking Latest Fashion's measure going found the top, gradually closed on the leading pair. .Nellie Parsons soon faded out and over the last hundred yards Hope Dillon could not loot it with the erratic daughter of Ballin. A protest against the winner on the ground of inconsistent running was dismissed Tempean wound up favourite for the Stoke Hack Handicap, but bis investments were not much in advance of those recorded against Kyia, Some Abbey, and Molto me field was ioon much strung out, those early prominent being Kyia, Some Abbey, and 'i'cninean. Several changes look place as they went round the top turn, and once into line for the post Some Abbey, Kyia, Tempean, and Molto were racing in close order. Theie was a scrimmage at the distance, of which Some Abbey and Molto got all the worst. This let Tempean through, and he just managed to defeat the foster finishing Molto by half a length. At a four lengths interval cswe Some Abbey, with Manchester close up The owner of Some Abbey entered a protest against the winner on the ground of interference, which was dismissed. Backers had a rare surprise sprung on tb?m in the Glen Memorial Welter Handicap, which attracted the' best field of Sprinters. seen out at the Meeting. All the heavy money was tor Lord Leslie, Probate, KaJakaua, and Beaumont. After Megalo and Beaumont had shown out for a. few strides, Misgovern, cleared right away and when half tVe journey had been left behind. Megalo, Kalakaua. and Beaumont were her nearest attendants. At the distant Beaumont had the leader doing her hest., he failed to reach her bj\half a l«n;rth. with Kalakaua a lenrth away third. The winner paid' a fine dividend, which is not «"rprising in the face' of her earlier display.
