* DEATHS IN U.S. BIG INCREASE FOR YEAR. (BT CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPT3IOHT.) (AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received January 15th, 9.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 14. Following a survey, it is announced that of twenty-five American cities, poisoned liquor and alcoholism took 1-317 lives in 1925, representing an increase of -100 over the. 1924: figures. New York heads, the list with 478 deaths, Chicago is nest with 1M.3, then Pittsburg with 140. Washington, alone, showed no increase having 21 deaths, the same as in 1924. Dallas and Milwaukee reported no fatalities, sind Seattle reported five fewer fatalities than in 19"2o.
.Many .southern cities report no poison deaths, due to tho fact that much home-made corn whisky is consumed, hut alcoholism fatalities remain fairly constant in the centres of foreign population, which are th.'j heaviest hit hv poisoned liquor, unscrupulous vendors having unlimited scope due zu tha ignorance of the purchasers.
