RETIRING COMMISSIONER.

♦ — ~~ SELWYN PLANTATIONS BOARD. The Commissioner of Crown Lauds, Mr G. H. Bullard, who is, retiring, and taking up residence in Wellington, was presented, at yesterday's meeting of the Helwyn Plantation Board witli a nfonograiumed Kaiapoi travelling rug. ■'■■■' The Hon. G.»Witcy, who. maue the presentation,,, said that Mr Bullard waa retiring after many years of valuable service? Commissioners usually cam© to the Board as chairman, when they were about to' retire, and' they then left the chairmanship of tho Board just when they were becoming useful. But Mr Bullard had given very valuable service, and done an enormous amount of exceedingly useful worlir. He. had had: a good deal to do the returned soldiers, and had never spared himself in the Board's fiervice. Mr Bullard's successor, whoever lie might be, could noc possibly take a keener interest' in plantation work than tho retiring Commissioner. ~ . . Mr S. A. Staples said : that under the arrangement whereby Commissioners of Crown Lands were chairmen of tho Plantation Bdard, the Board had the benefit of their long experience" in forest awl bush matters, ft really gained by having the Commissioners at the end of their term. He endorsed the remarks made by Mr Witty. Mr Bullard replied suitably.
