Some people.in Auckland (says the "New Zealand Herald") still remember there was a war with Germany in IDI4, and therefore prefer to buy British manufactured goods. One lady, who has cause to remember the war, tries hard not to buy German-made goods. Eecently she took back an article which when she got home she found marked "Made in Germany." Her next purchase was branded "Swedish steel,'' but when she opened the parcel she found on the flap of the package tho mark "Made in Germany." That lot was also returned, tout if sho wants to buy a doll for a Christmas gift she will find plenty in Auckland that were made in Germany. This athleto was j one of Auckland's best walkers over 30 years ago, and was competing at the same time as those champions, Alf. Brady, Prank Creamer, and A. P. Burton. Ho won the Now Zealand half-mile championship in 1896, and at tho sports meeting to be held at Mauku on New Year's Day next it is intended to present him with a gold medal as a mark of recognition of his long association with athletic sports in Auckland. All manner of rumours are afloat within and without tho Wellington Town Hall (states the "Dominion") as to what tho Council intends to do in respect to the filling of certain vacancies, and as the members of the Finance "Committee aro reticent as to tho business of Thursday's meeting, there are anticipatory conjectures in plenty as to the pjroposal to bo placed before tho Council by the Finance Committee at next Thursday's meeting. One of such is a rumour that an officer _of the Council is to be given a position of executive power almost tantamount to that usually /ested in a city manager. Another story is that applications for the new position will be called from outside the Council staff altogether, and that should tho Council agree it will mean a partial reorganisation of the staff.
