TIMARU. i Social and Personal. Miss Doris Barker (Geraldine) is the guest of Mrs Theomin (Dunedini. Miss Howell (Marsden) is the gnest of Mrs J. P. Peter (Geraldine). Mr and Mrs W. W. Baxter (Wai-iti road) are in Christchureh. Mrs Delatour (Avenue road) has returned from Christchureh. Miss M. Kennedy has returned to Geraldine after a short stay in Timaru. Miss Islip (Park lane) is back from a visit to Miss Tripp (Orari Gorge). Mr G. A. Kain is the guest of Mrs Wolseley Kain (Geraldine). Mrs Haywood Mirams and Miss Gilbert Mirams (Wellington) arc visiting Tiuiaru. Mrs Xoel Bowman has returned to Christchureh after a holiday spent with Mrs Armstrong (Chalmers street). Miss Rosamund Peter, who w;is with Mrs Edgar Jones (''Otiritiri")> returned to Anama on Saturday. Mrs J. Gillies (Christchureh) left Timaru on Saturday for Dunedin and Wakatipu. 1 Miss Meg Loughnau (Fairlic) is back from a round of visits in Christchureh. Mrs E. B. Bell (Wai-iti road) returned home on Saturday after spendiug three weeks in Wellington and Christchureh. Mr John Goodwin (Park lane) lias gone to Wellington to meet Mr and Mrs Bolderson, who will arrive from England in the Remuera. Mjvs Ronald Fisher (Chrfctchurch), who was with Mrs C. E. Kerr (Kingsdown), left on Saturdav to stav with Mrs H. H. Fisher (Albury). Dr. and Mrs Marcus Mitchell (England) are staving at Ashwick Station with Mrs W. F. Hamilton. Mrs Frank Barker (Sclwyn street) went there on Saturdav.

Mrs R. IT. Rhodes (Sealey street) and her guest, Mrs Arthur Martin (Martinborough), have returned from a visit to Dunedin and the Southern Lakes.

Mr and Mrs Wolsley Kain and family (Geraldine) intend to spend Christmas on their run in Southland..- Mr and Mrs J. Vernon (Christchurch) will take their house for Christmas and the New Year.

Lady Marjorie Dalrymple, a District Commissioner of the Girl Guides in the South-West of Scotland, who has been visiting Christchurch, is expected in Timaru to-morrow. In the afternoon she will address a meeting of those interested in the Guide movement, in the Caroline Bay Hall, and later will inspect the local Girl Guide companies. The Weather. Little improvement in the weather conditions was apparent on Saturday, except for a slightly warmer atmosphere. Rain threatened during the greater part of the day, and at times a few drops fell. Competitions Society. The Timaru Competitions Society has decided to hold its second annual festival, commencing on August 22nd, 1!)26. The committee has appointed Mr Edwin Dennis, of Wellington, as judge of the vocal and instrumental sections, and Mr Culford Bell, of Wellington, as judge of elocution.

TEMUKA. , In spito of bad weather conditions,* there was a fairly good attendance at "Dinting House," the residence of Mr E. Brown, when' the Temuka Methodist. Church people held .their annual garden party. The grounds were in-perfect order and tho masses of bloom contrasted brilliantly with the green of the trees. Tho stalls were artistically arranged under the trees and were well patronised. Tho following is a list of stalls and the ladies in charge of them: —Afternoon tea, Mesdames Duncan and Booth ] , cake,' Mrs E. B. Cooper, sen.; fancy work, Mrs B. Hayma.n; country, Miss Maddren; sweets, Miss Burtenshaw and Y.W.8.C.; soft drinks, Y.M.B.C: fruit salad, Miss M. Hancox; ico cream, Bertie Blackmore. During the afternoon an open-air concert of high order was given by the following:—Miss Mabel Sinclair, policeman dance; Mr Knibb, solo; Miss Sinclair and party, Dutch clog dance; Miss Williamson, solo; Miss Ivy Henry, mandolin; Miss Peggy Waters, Irish jig; Mrs Sharp and Miss Gimson% duet, Miss Hazel'Hogg, recitation ; Miss Sinclair and Zoo Williams, Irish reel; Miss May Willoughby, solo; Miss Sinclair, tambourine; and several items bv the Lyrio Orchestra. Hie Mayor (Mr G. B. Cartwright) said he could not congratulate them on the weather, but all would agree that he would bo right in congratulating them on having so good a host and hostess. The Rev. A. C. Lawry said they .should be glad the day was damp, as then they could have no dry speeches. He also congratulated them on having such hospitable hosts, and made feeling reference to the Queen Mother, paying a high tribute to her memory. The Rev. R.. Richards then thanked the Mayor and Mr Lawry for their addresses; likewise he expressed grateful thanks to their host and hostess and to all who had assisted. He was especially grateful to the artists who had come from Geraldine and Timaru to contribute towards the entertainment. The takings from all sources amounted to about £35.

Miss Stone's special prize for the boy or girl selling most tickets was awarded to Phyllis Burrows.

RAKAIA. On Friday afternoon a very enjoyable cradle roll garden party, under the auspices of the Itakaia branch of the W.C.T.U., was held at the residence of Mrs "W. Boag. "Graccfiold," Jlakaia. A very large number of children and their parents were present, and a very pleasant afternoon was spent in the l>ea.utifui grounds. Swings had been erected in the plantation. The smaller children played games on the lawn, while bowls and tennis provided amusement for the young people. Afternoon tea was served under the trees. Before leaving for home, each child received a present from a large Christmas tree. On behalf of those present. Mr W. J. Henderson thanked Mrs Boag for her hospitality and hearty cheers were given by" tlie children. Votes of thanks were passed to those who had provided ears to convey the children to and from the party.
