MID-CANTERBURY

ASHBURTON. PERSONAL. The Hon. W. Nosworthy. Minister of Finance and Agriculture, has returned to Wellington. Mr G. Dennis, of Invcrcargill, who has been undertaking the managerial duties at His Majesty's Theatre during the absence of Mr W. B. Cadzow, on leave, returned south on Saturday. Dr. Kidd, medical superintendent of the Waipiata Sanatorium, will visit Ashburton on Wednesday for the purpose of examining applicants for admission to the institution. A Baby's Death. Mary Ellen, the two and a half months old child- of Mr and Mrs W. P. .Lambert, of Tinwald, was found dead ,in bed by her mother on Saturday. The father of the baby went in to see it at 0.30 a.m., when it was awake, but he was rung up at his work by his wife at !) o'clock'to say that the child was dead. An inquest was formally opened on Saturday afternoon, before the District Coroner (Mr J. Cow), and adjourned sine die. General News. The following nominations have been received by the returning officer (Mr J.- B. Meeking) for the vacant seat on the Tinwald Town Board, caused bv the death of Mr W. H. Bell:—Herbert Wade Carpendale, David Watts, and Arthur Watson. The election will be held next Friday. The final dance of the season, conducted under the auspices of the Hakatere Lodge, was held in the Tancred street. Hall on Saturday night, when there was a large attendance. Mrs A. Mitchell's Orchestra supplied the music. A social evening and presentation of medals to the Wanderers' junior team, the winners of the Ashburton Football Sub-Association's junior competition, took place in the Victoria Hall on Saturday evening. There was a good attendance of footballers and friends, and a number of games and competitions were played. The president of the Association, Mf Albert Amos, in presenting the medals, congratulated the team unon its win. Mrs H. Moody organised" the musical programme.

East Ashburton Carnival. '. The promoters of the East Ashburton Queen Carnival, for the purpose of increasing and improving the school playing area, have every reason to be proud of their efforts, for, taking into account the fact that there have been numerous demands made upon the public of late, the results may be considered highly gratifying. The residents of that part of : the town have responded with the liberality which is i characteristic of them-. The fete was well attended on Saturday afternoon and evening, and the various stalls had a. very depleted appearance towards the conclusion. A great deal of enthusiasm was displayed in, the competition between the three queens. Mail Notices.

MOUNT SOMERS. Wintry weather came wi|h suddenness on Thursday in the shape of showers of hail, snow, and rain. The around was covered to the depth of an inch; and the hills received a heavier coating;. There was fro&t during the night,-and potatoes destined for Christmas received a se'tback. The Library Committee met on Thursday evening. There were present Miss Wood (librarian), Messrs Jones (chairman), Nell,"and Morgan. A donation of books suitable for school children was made to the newly founded schjool library. It was decided to send some of the most worn books to. .somo benevolent institutioi and to purchase another of new books. METHVEN. The annual children's tea and prizegiving in connexion with All Saints' Sunday School was held on Friday evening. The tea was held in the Sunday School, and the tables looked very pretty with their florai decorations. A large number ladies of the congregation under itfesdames Morgan and Smith were responsible for the tea arrangements. Later in the evening, a concert was given in the Public Hall by the Sunday School scholars. The attendance of the public was very large, and each item was enthusiastically Beceived. Credit for the work of preparing the. children for the entertainment is duo to Miss Dulcie Pawson, who spared no trouble in her efforts to make the gathering a success. The following were the items contributed: —Pianoforte solo, Audrey Bremer; chorus by boys, "Learning to be Soldiers"'; song, Kitty Beary, "There are Fairies"; pianoforte duet, Molly Sim and Belle Beary; . chorus by scholars, "Grandfather's Clock"; recitation, Rona Topp, "Picking Apples"; song, Theo Dore, "Juvenile Jonah"; recitation, Eric Waddington, "The Tidy Wife" ; character sketch and songs, "The Hat Shop" by senior girls; recitation, Robbie Topp, '"Tragic Story"; song, Estelle Doherty and Leo Pawson, "1 Don't Have to Die"; chorus, senior pupils, "The Golden Sun"; song, Mavis Niekolls, "Sitting in a Corner"; recitation, Theo Dore, "Dad's Batty"; closing chorus by scholars, "Bedtime." At the close of the concert and before presenting the prizes, the Rev. F. A. Tooley expressed his thanks to the ladies of the congregation for their efforts in connexion with the tea, and also to Miss Pawson for her promoting the concert, and to all those who had assisted to make the gathering a success. He also made reference to the 'impending retirement of Miss Pawson from the Sunday School, and thanked the various teachers for the self-sacri-ficing work done during the past year. Mr Tooley then called on little Vera Cooksley, on behalf of the scholars, to present Miss Dulcie, Pawson with a handsome toilet set as a token of their regard.
