THE EARTHQUAKE.

RUMBLES HEARD. | Regarding the earthquake felt in | Christchurch at 2 a.m. on Saturday, the Observatory authorities state that, according to their records, the seis- | mograph seemed to have received im- j pulses for 10.4 minutes after the initial ' disturbance, which was the one felt. The first waves recorded would appear to be of the type known as long ; waves, and the tact that no prclimin- i ary waves were clearly recorded before would suggest that the origin of the quake was not far distant; _ the time between the arrivals of the different kinds of waves was the index from which the distance might be calculated. The seismograph at . the Observatory is undamped, and it was thoroforo difficult to bo sure of any type of wavewhen the record was as much displaced as the present one was. Just after 2 a.m. on Saturday morning a shock of earthquake was felt at Rangiora; the quake was preceded by a fairly loud rumble, followed by a sudden jolt.
