FIRES.
A TIMELY ESCAPE. (press association - tjilegbam.) AUCKLAND, November 27. A three-roomed cottage at Harlston avenue, lit. Albert, was destroyed by lire at 2 o'clock this morning. The occupants of the cottage- were Mrs Davis, the .wifo of a quarryman, who was' living near hi.s work at Penrose, and eight young children. On waking Mrs Davis found escape by the door impossible, but she tore down the front wall, which was made of sacking, and made a hole large enough to permit all to escape in their night attire, just as the building collapsed. Neighbours took the -unfortunate family in for the rest of the night. Be prepared. See that you have adequate insurance on your house and furniture. Consult the Mercantile and General Insurance Co., Ltd., Hereford street. It is a local company with all ifs capital invested in New Zealand, therefore prompt settlements. —6
