OPOSSUM POACHERS.
FINES OF £25. , j (PEKSS ASSOCUTIOH TKUSQRAM.) WELLINGTON, November 27. France Lawrence Clark and Maurice Brie Field were charged at the Magistrate's Court with, illegally taking opossums before the season opened, Botth pleaded guilty. The police stated that the skins were purchased by a firm of brokers* in Wellington, but the firm denied tho ourchase. This firm was equally liable ■with the trappers. The Chief-Detective said he understood that tho case had come to Court through the admissions by the accused as a result of a dispute between them and the brokers regarding the payment for the skins. Accused stated in Court that the taking of opossums before tho season opened was a general thing and the rangers seemed to bo shutting their eyes to the.practice. Accused were fined £25. each, both being allowed one month in which to pay the amount.
